Senior (1990-91)
Scales capped off his Husker career by leading the Huskers to arguably their most successful season in school history with 26 wins and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Scales ended up with 1,136 career points, tied for 20th with former high school teammate Carl Hayes. He was one of five Huskers to average in double figures in 1990-91, ending up fifth on the team with a 10.2 points per game average. Scales led the team in minutes and was one of two Huskers (with Beau Reid) to start all 34 games. He led the team in three-point percentage (.456) and steals (64), was second in free-throw percentage (.800), third in assists (93) and sixth in field-goal percentage (.467).

Junior (1989-90)
Spent his first two seasons at NU alternating between off-guard and the point, but directed all of his attention on the point guard responsibilities as a junior and earned honorable-mention All-Big Eight recognition (AP) and NU's team MVP award. He started all 26 games that he played in, and was NU's second-leading scorer at 12.2 points per game. Scales led the team in free-throw shooting (.840), assists (110), steals (44) and minutes played (824). His free-throw percentage ranked as the eighth-best single-season effort in school history, while his assist (10th) and steal (eighth) figures were also among the best single-season performances in school history. Scales ranked fourth in the Big Eight in free-throw shooting, tied for fifth in steals (1.7 spg), and was eight in assists (4.2 apg). He topped Husker backcourt performers in field-goal shooting for the third-straight season at 51.1 percent, and hit 41.7 percent from 3-point range. Scales produced 18 double-figure scoring games, and netted a career-high 25 points against Kansas State. A strong rebounding guard, Scales grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds against Texas Tech, and in the process, became just the third player in Nebraska history to own double-figure career highs in points, rebounds and assists. He collected five or more assists 12 times with a season-high of eight against Kansas, which equaled the highest single-game effort by a Husker in 1989-90. Named to the Ameritas Classic All-Tournament team for the second-straight season after he scored 35 points and collected 12 assists in the Huskers' two victories.

Sophomore (1988-89)
Scales drew 27 starts and averaged 9.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. He was second on the team in steals (37), third in minutes played (919), fourth in assists (88), and led the NU backcourt in field-goal percentage at .482. Scales scored in double figures 14 times, including a then-career-high 22-point effort against Drake. He scored 31 points and dished out 10 assists in helping Nebraska to the Ameritas Classic title and earned all-tournament honors for his two-game performance. Scales twice earned Ford player-of-the-game honors. He picked up his first award after scoring 16 points in Nebraska's 74-70 victory over Kansas, then came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points three weeks later against Iowa State and earn his second honor. Dished out a career-high 10 assists in the Huskers' first-round NIT victory over Arkansas State.

Freshman (1987-88)
Named to the Big Eight's all-freshman team, Scales was the lone Husker freshman to appear in all 31 games, and he drew five starting assignments. He averaged 5.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, and connected on 71 of 139 field goals for 51.1 percent, tops among NU's backcourt performers. Scales ranked third on the team in both assists (63) and steals (32). His top scoring and rebounding game came against Columbia when he tallied 15 points and five rebounds. He made his first collegiate start in Nebraska's 67-62 victory at Oregon.
