Jamarques Lawrence emerged as a significant contributor as a true freshman. He appeared in 28 games, including 12 starts, and averaged 5.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. After a season-ending injury to Emmanuel Bandoumel in mid-January, Lawrence moved into the lineup and flourished, averaging 9.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 39 percent from 3-point range. He had all seven of his double-figure efforts in that stretch, including 15-point games against Michigan State and at Iowa.
His most extensive action in non-conference action came at Kansas State when he tallied nine points and five rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench. Lawrence, who played more than 15 minutes once in NU's first 17 games, had six points in 22 minutes at No. 4 Purdue and five points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer, and four boards in 19 minutes in a win over Ohio State. Lawrence made his first career start against Northwestern on Jan. 25, and had 12 points, including four 3-pointers, and three assists in 33 minutes. He nearly posted a double-double in the win over Penn State on Feb. 5 with 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists. He closed the year playing his best basketball with four straight double-figure games and averaging 13.3 points on 53 percent shooting, including 46 percent from 3-point range, along with 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. The stretch featured a pair of 15-point games against Michigan State and Iowa when he earned Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week accolades. Against MSU, he hit 7-of-10 shots from the field, while he sank a career-high five 3-pointers and added a season-best four assists in the win at Iowa.
Before Nebraska
A consensus three-star prospect, Jamarques Lawrence spent the last two seasons at perennial power Roselle Catholic High School playing for Coach Dave Boff. The program went 29-2 on the year en route to winning the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions title. Roselle Catholic finished in the top 10 by both Max Preps (fourth) and USA Today (sixth).
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound guard was ranked as high as No. 145 nationally by Rivals and was among the top 250 seniors by 247Sports. As a senior in 2021-22, he earned first-team all-state honors by averaging 15.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game for the top-ranked team in New Jersey while averaging nearly two 3-pointers per contest. He reached double figures 22 times as a senior, including eight games of at least 20 points, including a season-high 26-point effort against The Patrick School. He had 21 points and 10 rebounds against Trenton Catholic in the state title game and 18 points and 10 rebounds in the Tournament of Champions semifinal.
As a junior, he averaged 13.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game, as Roselle Catholic posted a 15-3 mark in a shortened season. He finished in double figures in 10 of 15 contests, including a 23-point effort against The Patrick School. Lawrence had four-or-more 3-pointers five times, including one game with six 3-pointers.
Lawrence, who spent his first two seasons at Plainfield High School, averaged 20.3 ppg as a sophomore, including 81 3-pointers. In his four-year high school career, he totaled 1,447 points, including over 200 3-pointers, as well as 280 rebounds and 250 assists in 91 contests. Lawrence played AAU hoops for the NY Jayhawks and Coach Jay David. Lawrence chose Nebraska over a host of schools including Wake Forest, DePaul, Virginia Tech, Cal and Wichita State.
Personal
The son of Jacqueline Jones (Duncan), Jamarques Lawrence was born on Dec. 10, 2003 in Raleigh, N.C. He has two older brothers (Derek Jones and Kareem Lawrence). He has not declared a major at Nebraska.
