Career

Tyrone Williams was a two-time first-team All-Big Eight selection as he aided the Huskers to back-to-back national championships. Williams was a three-year starter at right cornerback, where he totaled 95 tackles, 11 pass breakups and five interceptions for 60 yards. He was selected in third round of the 1996 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. Williams would go on to win a ring as a member of the team when the Packers defeated the Patriots, 35-21, in Super Bowl XXXI. He would play nine years in the NFL (1996-2002 - Green Bay, 2003 - Atlanta Falcons, 2004 - Dallas Cowboys) before retiring.

1995 (Senior)

A three-year starter at right corner, Williams earned first-team All-Big Eight honors from the AP in 1995 as he had 28 tackles (19 solo), one tackle for nine yards lost (against Washington State), one fumble recovery, three breakups, one QB hurry and one interception for an 11-yard return against Kansas. Williams tied his career high with six tackles against Kansas while his breakups came against Michigan State, Kansas State and Kansas.

1994 (Junior)

Williams at right cornerback combined with left corner Barron Miles to give the Huskers one of the best, and most possibly underrated, secondary combinations in the nation. Both Miles and Williams were named to the league coaches All-Big Eight first team. After earning Big-Eight Co-Defensive Newcomer-of-the-Year honors in 1993, Williams started and played in every game except West Virginia and finished as the team's 11th-leading tackler with 38 stops (31 solo). He was second on the team to Miles with five breakups and second to Miles in interceptions with three. Williams had interceptions against Pacific, Wyoming and Kansas, and tied his career high with six tackles against No. 2 Colorado. Also a punt returner, Williams had four returns for 42 yards.

1993 (Sophomore)

Williams quickly made a name for himself in the Husker secondary in his first year at NU. When Nebraska returned just one starting defensive back from the 1992 team, Coach Osborne said that was an area of concern. But the newcomer from Palmetto, Fla., stepping in as a starter in the fourth game of the season at right corner and started seven of the last eight games at that spot, allowing John Reece to move to free safety. Williams was chosen by the coaches as Big Eight Co-Defensive Newcomer-of-the-Year. He finished with the 10th-most tackles on the team with 29 (14 solo). He had one interception for a 15-yard return against Kansas State. In the national championship game against Florida State, Williams had career highs with nine tackles (eight solo) and three pass breakups.

Before Nebraska (Manatee High School)

Williams earned three letters in football, four in basketball and two in track at Manatee. He played I-back and defensive back for Coach Joe Kinnan at Class 5A (largest) Manatee High School. In 1991, Williams aided Manatee to a 12-1 record with fellow Husker Tommie Frazier at quarterback.

Personal

The son of Louise Williams, Tyrone was born May 31, 1973, in Bradenton, Fla. Along with Tommie Frazier in the summer of 1993, Tyrone helped save a neighbor's house from burning down. Despite the fact that Tyrone was in Miami to play in the national championship game, he took time off after practice to speak to kids in the Dade County housing projects about staying in school and developing good role models.
