2025 (Redshirt Freshman)
Mekhi Nelson played in 12 games with one start in 2025. He rushed27 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns, ranking second on the team in rushing. Nelson also caught eight passes for 102 yards and recorded two special teams tackles.

Nelson had one carry against Cincinnati. He carried the ball five times for 11 yards against Akron while scoring his first career touchdown. Nelson also set career highs with three receptions and 52 receiving yards. Nelson set career highs with three carries and 19 rushing yards against No. 21 Michigan, and he also had a career-long 11-yard carry against the Wolverines. He also had an 11-yard carry against Michigan State. On special teams, Nelson recovered a fumble on kickoff coverage that set up a Husker go-ahead fourth-quarter field goal against Michigan State. Nelson caught a six-yard pass against Northwestern. He had one carry for two yards against No. 23 USC. Nelson carried three times for 13 yards at Penn State and also had a 10-yard kickoff return. Nelson had a three-yard carry against Iowa.

Nelson made the first start of his career against No. 15 Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl. He totaled 136 yards from scrimmage aginst the Utes, rushing 12 times for 88 yards and one touchdown and catching three passes for 48 yards.

2024 (Redshirt)
Nelson played in one game in 2024 while redshirting. He had one carry for two yards in his debut against UTEP.

Before Nebraska (Wilkes-Barre/St. Thomas More [Conn.] Prep)
Nelson was a standout for Wilkes-Barre High School in Pennsylvania before playing his final season at St. Thomas More prep school in Connecticut. He initially intended to play two seasons at St. Thomas More before deciding to join the Huskers after one year.

At Wilkes-Barre High School, Nelson rushed for more than 2,200 yards according to MaxPreps. He ran for 1,670 yards as a junior, scoring 22 touchdowns. He averaged 7.6 yards per carry and 151.8 yards per game as a junior with eight 100-yard rushing games. In his sophomore season, Nelson rushed for 586 yards and nine touchdowns. He also caught 23 passes for 427 yards and three touchdowns at Wilkes-Barre.

Mekhi is the son of Kimberly and Rashawn Nelson. Mekhi is a child, youth and family studies major.
