- National Assistant Coach of the Year (2011 at Trinity Bible College)
Orah Garst fills a variety of roles on the Nebraska coaching staff. He contributes in a coaching capacity as an offensive quality control coach, and he also plays a key role in leading the creative and recruiting efforts of the football program as the Director of Football Creative and Engagement.
In his fourth season at Nebraska in 2022, Garst owns more than a decade of collegiate coaching experience plus six seasons of experience as a recruiting-driven content creator at three different Power Five programs. He took a unique path to Lincoln, one that provided him with expertise in several football operations areas, including coaching, recruiting and administration.
Out of college, Garst spent nearly a decade as a coach at the Division III and NAIA levels. Not only was he a defensive coordinator by age 21, but in 2011 he was the National Christian College Athletic Association National Assistant Coach of the Year at Trinity Bible College. He spent a total of six seasons as an assistant at Trinity Bible College, where he worked with the defensive backs in addition to coordinating the defense. Garst then coached at Southwestern Assemblies of God University, his alma mater, in 2016. In addition to coaching the Lion linebackers, Garst also served as the Director of Football Creative at SAGU.
Recognized as one of the top coaches at the Division III level, Garst not only excelled at coaching, but he also developed elite branding and marketing skills as a content creator. Garst used those talents to make the jump to the FBS level, serving as a social media intern at TCU in 2017, helping the Horned Frogs land a top-30 national recruiting class. Garst spent one year at TCU before current NFL head coach Matt Rhule hired Garst as a visual media specialist at Baylor.
Garst joined Nebraska in 2019, where he was charged with developing a staff to lead the creative efforts of the Husker football program. His duties include the creation of videos, graphic designs and social media messaging to increase the reach of the Husker brand and engage prospective student-athletes. Garst's efforts have proven successful, as Nebraska landed top-20 recruiting classes in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
In his career, Garst has worked with some of the nation's top coaches, including two-time National Coach of the Year Gary Patterson and 2017 National Coach of the Year Scott Frost.
Garst earned his bachelor's degree in communications and arts from Southwestern Assemblies of God University, and he is working toward a master's degree at Nebraska. He and his wife, Elisabeth, have one son, Orah III, and one daughter, Lorena-Kay.
