2005 (Senior)
The emergence of Blake Tiedtke during his senior season was one of the top storylines of the 2005 Husker season. Tiedtke was recognized as Nebraska’s Most Improved Defensive player in the spring, and was the starting free safety in the fall. He made the most of his opportunity, finishing fourth on the team in tackles.
A former walk-on, Tiedtke earned a scholarship and a Blackshirt for the 2005 season, and finished with 68 total tackles. He started all 12 games and in addition to his tackle total added six pass breakups, four sacks and a pair of forced fumbles. Tiedtke’s four sacks were part of NU’s nation-leading total of 50 in 2005.
The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native quickly showed he was up to the challenge of replacing Josh Bullocks at the free safety spot. He had four tackles in the opener against Maine, including a five-yard sack. In game two against Wake Forest, Tiedtke had three tackles and his first career intercpetion, one of four NU takeaways in the game. He tied his season high with eight tackles against Pittsburgh.
Tiedtke picked up his second sack of the season against Texas Tech, when he had a total of seven tackles. The following week he made eight tackles at Baylor, including five solo stops, and forced a fumble. Tiedtke picked up his third sack of the season at Missouri. Tiedtke matched his season high with eight tackles at Kansas, again making five solo stops. He capped his Nebraska career in excellent fashion, posting his fourth sack of the year and a career-high two tackles for loss in Nebraska’s Alamo Bowl victory over Michigan. Tiedtke caused a fumble on his sack, and the Huskers recovered and converted the takeaway into the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Tiedtke excelled in the classroom throughout his Nebraska career. He was a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-District pick as a senior and was also a first-team academic All-Big 12 pick. He was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll 10 straight semesters and earned his bachelor's degree in May of 2006.
2004 (Junior)
Tiedtke played vs. Western Illinois and Texas Tech, but did not have a tackle.
2003 (Sophomore)
Tiedtke played in wins over Oklahoma State and Texas A&M as a reserve defensive back.
2002 (Redshirt Freshman)
Tiedtke played in four games as a reserve cornerback and on special teams. He made an assisted tackle against Kansas and saw action against Arizona State, McNeese State and the Independence Bowl against Ole Miss.
2001 (Redshirt)
A walk-on, Tiedtke redshirted his first season at Nebraska.
Before Nebraska (Jefferson HS)
Tiedtke played tailback and returned kicks for Coach Dave Jacobsen at Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Jefferson High School. Tiedtke earned first-team elite all-state honors from the Des Moines Register and was a first-team coaches all-state pick. He helped Jefferson to the Class 4A playoffs and a state playoff berth as a senior when he rushed for 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns. Tiedtke set five school records, including career rushing yards and punt and kickoff return average. Tiedtke also lettered in track and basketball, earning all-conference honors in both sports.
Personal
The son of Robert and Michelle Tiedtke, Blake was born on June 24, 1982. An exercise science major, Tiedtke earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in May of 2006. He was a first-team academic All-Big 12 selection as a senior and was a 10-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection.
