One of the leaders of the Blackshirts, Jeremy Slechta (pronounced Seh-LECHT-tuh) was one of five Husker team captains ins 2001.  The 6-6, 285-pound defensive tackle took over full-time starting duties, recording 44 stops and eight quarterback hurries.  A second-team All-Big 12 selection by the Dallas Morning News and a third-team pick by the coaches, Slechta helped the Husker defense rank among the top 10 in four major defensive categories, including second in pass efficiency defense (83.8), sixth in scoring defense (15.8 ppg), eighth in total defense (287.2 ypg) and ninth in pass defense (170.3 ypg).  NU alsom limited its opponents to an average of 116.9 yards rushing per game.  Slechta finished his career with 97 total tackles, including 14 tackles for loss with six quarterback sacks.  He also set a school single-season position record with six pass breakups in 2000, including tying a single-game position record with three breakups against Missouri.  He fell one shy of Steve Warren's career position record of 11 breakups.  Slechta graduated in May 2002.
