Demoine (pronounced Deh-MOINE) Adams has been a key contributor for the Blackshirts at rush end for the past four years. Adams has started eight games at rush end in 2002 and 24 games at the position in his Husker career. He finished the 2002 campaign with 34 tackles and his nine tackles for loss tied for third-most among all Huskers.
Adams' hard work is not limited to the playing field. In the classroom, he received his third first-team Academic All-Big 12 honor in 2002, after also receiving the honor in 1999 and 2000. Adams graduated in August of 2001 after just three years on campus. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science and five minors. Adams has played the past two seasons with his degree in hand, while enrolled as a graduate student.
His academic achievements indicate only part of the dedication Adams has displayed throughout his career. He was the 2002 Nebraska Lifter of the Year, after he had been a finalist for the honor the previous year.
2002: Adams was one of four rush ends to see extensive action. He started eight games, including the first five at rush end before giving way to junior Trevor Johnson. Adams earned three more starts in the next four games and played a key role in NU?s three-man end rotation while fellow senior Chris Kelsay was sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Adams has 34 tackles, with nine tackles for loss totaling 23 yards. He also had 3.5 sacks for 17 yards in losses and six quarterback hurries. He opened the season against Arizona State by splitting a pair of sacks and had two quarterback hurries. With Kelsay sidelined, Adams stepped up his game in a 24-13 victory over Missouri. He registered 1.5 sacks as NU limited the Tigers to just 220 total yards. The Missouri contest was the first of three straight games in which Adams had at least one tackle for loss. He capped the Texas A&M victory by pressuring Aggie quarterback Dustin Long on Philip Bland's interception late in the fourth quarter.
2001: Adams started all 12 games at right rush end opposite Chris Kelsay. The junior from Pine Bluff, Ark., led the Huskers with 5.5 sacks for 46 yards lost, while ranking fourth on the squad with eight tackles for 49 yards lost. Adams finished the season with 25 total tackles, including 11 solos, to earn honorable-mention All-Big 12 honors. Adams tied Kelsay for the team lead in quarterback hurries with 12.
Adams logged five total tackles in the season opener vs. TCU, including one sack for an 11-yard loss. He notched two assisted tackles against Troy State. Against Notre Dame, Adams posted two tackles, including one sack of Carlyle Holiday for a loss of four yards. Adams also caused a fumble on Notre Dame's first drive, which was recovered by Jamie Burrow, leading to an NU touchdown. Adams had one solo tackle, one pass deflection and one quarterback hurry against Rice. At Missouri, Adams recorded two solo tackles, including one for a three-yard loss and one quarterback hurry. Adams had one solo tackle vs. Iowa State, then at Baylor, Adams produced a career-high six tackles, including three solos, a career-high two sacks for a loss of 15 yards, one quarterback hurry and a fumble caused. He recorded one solo tackle, a career-best three quarterback hurries and caused an interception against Texas Tech in NU's 41-31 win. Adams registered one assist and two quarterback hurries vs. Oklahoma. At Kansas, he posted one solo stop and one assist, including a sack for a loss of 11 yards. Adams notched one-half sack for a loss of five yards and one quarterback hurry against Kansas State. In the loss at Colorado, Adams had one assisted tackle, a pass deflection and a quarterback hurry. At the national championship game in the 2002 Rose Bowl against Miami, Adams started and recorded four tackles, including a career-best three solo stops. He also had one tackle for three yards lost.
2000: Adams played in every game and started the first four at rush end, finishing with 12 tackles, including one for a one-yard loss, one pass breakup and five quarterback hurries. He had a season-best three tackles against No. 23 Notre Dame in a 27-24 overtime win. His tackle for loss came against No. 16 Kansas State. He had a season-best two quarterback hurries vs. Missouri, and one each vs. San Jose State, Notre Dame and Kansas State. In the 2000 Alamo Bowl, Adams had one assisted tackle.
1999: Adams played in 11 games as Kyle Vanden Bosch's backup at right rush end, primarily in pass rushing situations, and totaled five tackles (four solo), including two tackles for losses. He was in on one sack (shared with Steve Warren at Missouri for six yards lost), had four quarterback hurries and a fumble return for a touchdown. Against ISU, Joe Walker sacked Cyclone quarterback Derrick Walker causing him to fumble, which Adams scooped up and returned 37 yards for a touchdown. Adams suffered a dislocated middle finger on his right hand against Texas in the Big 12 Championship game, but returned to action vs. Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl.
1998: A scholarship athlete, Adams redshirted his first year at Nebraska after having surgery on his left knee in August.
At Pine Bluff HS: Adams was a first-team all-state defensive end, linebacker and tight end for Pine Bluff High School in Arkansas. The Pine Bluff Commercial Arkansas Defensive Player of the Year, Adams assisted Coach Marion Glover and his Class 4A team to a 33-5 record from 1995 to 1997. In his last two seasons, Adams tallied 193 tackles, including 23.5 sacks. In 1997, he also caught five passes for 153 yards and a touchdown. He was a USA Today honorable-mention All-America selection. Adams won the bench press competition at his school his last three years, with a best of 405 pounds as a senior. In track, Adams earned all-state honors as a member of Pine Bluff High's 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams, all of which won state titles in 1998. Adams visited Arkansas, Mississippi and Missouri before choosing Nebraska.
Personal: The son of Ollie Johnson and Ralph Adams and the grandson of Edna Adams, Demoine was born on Aug. 17, 1980. With an undergraduate degree in political science, Adams is the second Husker in recent years to earn his undergraduate degree in three years, following in the footsteps of Bobby Newcombe, who accomplished the feat in 2000. He is one of five Huskers who will be playing with degree in hand this season, joining Ben Cornelsen, Dahrran Diedrick, Justin Smith and Patrick Kabongo. Adams is a three-year member of the Unity Council (2000, 2001, 2002), a volunteer with the "I've Got Heart" card series, and a speaker at the "School is Cool Jam" and Chadron Tour of Excellence events. He has also served as a mentor at Belmont School and has been a Walk Against Violence speaker. For his efforts in the community, Adams was named to the 2001 Brook Berringer Citizenship Team.
