Career

Jerome Peterson appeared in 25 games (starting three) during his three year Husker career. He finished with 17 tackles (13 solo), five pass breakups and one interception. Following his junior season in 1998, he decided to pursue other interests and left the program. Peterson departed as a member of Nebraska's 1995 and 1997 national championship teams.

1998 (Junior)

Peterson entered his junior season as back up right corner to All-Big 12 defensive back Ralph Brown. Peterson appeared in seven games and had one solo tackle.

1997 (Sophomore)

Peterson started the first three games at left corner, then yielded the starting duties to true freshman Erwin Swiney and moved to right corner to back up Brown. Peterson played in nine games and recorded 10 tackles. He had four breakups and one interception against Central Florida. He had a career-best six tackles (all solo) against the UCF Golden Knights and one pass breakup. Peterson played in the 1998 Orange Bowl against Tennessee, but did not record any tackles.

1996 (Freshman)

Peterson served as a backup at right corner behind Michael Booker. Playing in nine games, Peterson recorded six tackles, including three solo stops. He had a season-best two tackles against Kansas and also had his lone breakup of the year against the Jayhawks. He played in the 1996 Orange Bowl against Virginia Tech, but did not record any tackles.

1995 (Redshirt)

A scholarship athlete, Peterson redshirted his first year in Lincoln.

Before Nebraska (Port Allen High School)

Originally from Oakland, Calif., Peterson played only two seasons of high school football for Port Allen, a 3A high school in Port Allen, La., which is near Baton Rouge. Playing for Coach Gary Adkins, he recorded impressive numbers during those two years. As a senior I-back, Peterson amassed 2,200 yards rushing and 29 touchdowns. He rushed for more than 200 yards in six of his team's 11 games, including a season-high 304 yards against Donaldsonville. As a junior, Peterson tallied 1,600 yards on the ground. In one game, he ran for 410 yards and eight touchdowns on 17 carries (against East Iberville). He was named to Bluechip Illustrated's All-America team as a running back. He also played in the secondary. He earned first-team all-state honors from the Louisiana Sportswriters Association as a senior running back, after earning second-team honors as a junior. Although he only returned four kicks as a senior, Peterson brought three of those back for touchdowns. He returned five kicks for touchdowns as a junior. He was the state runner-up in the 100 meters as a senior with a time of 10.56 and was the anchor of the state championship 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays. A top-notch powerlifter as well, Peterson won the Class 3A state championship for his weight division in 1993 and 1994. Peterson chose NU over Tennessee, Louisiana State, Texas A&M and Mississippi, but only visited Nebraska.

The son of Winnifred Jackson, Jerome was born on April 28, 1976, in Oakland, California.
