1998: A backup quarterback to Newcombe and Crouch, Runty played in four games. He did not have any pass attempts, but rushed three times for 59 yards. His long was a 28-yard run against Iowa State. He also had 1-5 vs. Washington and 1-26 vs. Kansas. 

1997: In 1997, Runty played in three games and rushed two times for eight yards, including a season best rush of five yards vs. Iowa. 

1996: A walk-on, Runty redshirted in 1996.

At Elkhorn HS: An honorable-mention all-state quarterbackand first team all conference and all-area player, Runty lettered twice in football and track and three times in basketball. He rushed and passed for more than 600 yards as a senior and as a junior passed for 1,180. Runty played for the North team in the 1996 Shrine Bowl. He also earned honorable-mention all-state honors on the hardwood. The President of his FCA, he was also a D.A.R.E. program member.

Personal: Jay was born on Sept. 13, 1977, to Steve and Jeannie Runty. His father, Steve, was a walk-on quarterback for the Huskers in 1972-73 behind starter Dave Humm. Jay majors in communications studies.
