Career

Jeff Perino finished his Husker career by appearing in 14 games (seven his freshman season and seven his senior season) and rushed 20 times for 118 yards. He sat out his sophomore and junior seasons on medical hardships due to knee complications. Perino would graduate from Nebraska as a member of its 1995 national championship team.

1999 (Senior)

Perino entered his senior season after sitting out the 1997 and 1998 seasons on medical hardships. With difficulties from three major knee surgeries, doctors thought Perino's career was over, but after serving as a student assistant coach in 1998, Perino applied to the NCAA to be reinstated after his knees finally began to feel better. He was granted a return to the team just before spring ball began. He and Jay Runty backed up returning starters Bobby Newcombe and Eric Crouch at quarterback. Perino appeared in seven games and carried the ball 15 times for 67 yards, an average of 4.5 yards a carry. His longest run on the season coming against Cal when he scampered for a 21-yard gain.

1998 (Junior)

Perino sat out his junior season on a medical hardship, but served as a student assistant coach.

1997 (Sophomore)

Perino sat out his sophomore season on a medical hardship.

1996 (Freshman)

Perino entered the fall in the thick of things. After a solid spring, Perino was listed even with senior Matt Turman behind projected starter Scott Frost. He had his right knee scoped following the 1996 Fiesta Bowl, but thought he was healthy for the start of fall. Playing in seven games, he had two pass attempts and rushed the ball five times for 51 yards (10.2 yards per carry), including a career-long of 28 yards against Baylor. He saw the most action against Missouri, when he had four carries for 23 yards.

1995 (Redshirt)

A scholarship athlete, Perino redshirted his first year in Lincoln.

Before Nebraska (Durango High School)

After earning second-team Class 4A (second largest) all-state quarterback honors as a junior, Perino played in only four games as a senior after dislocating a kneecap. Playing for Coach Brian Hester at Durango, in four games, Perino passed for 890 yards (66-110) and seven touchdowns and ran for 340 yards and seven touchdowns. As a junior, he passed for 1,800 yards and rushed for 463. As a junior he earned first-team all-state honors as a punter (39.6 yards per punt) and repeated as a senior with a 47.2 average. He also played outside linebacker as a sophomore. Perino picked NU after visiting Arizona State. Perino also pitched and played third base for the Durango baseball team earning all-state honors as a pitcher.

Personal

The son of Jim and Judy Perino, Jeff was born on Dec. 18, 1976, in Durango. Jeff majored in civil engineering and earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in May of 2000.
