Career

After Jason Jenkins and his teammates led the Cornhuskers to back-to-back National Championships, he continued his football playing career in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts. Exploring his athleticism Jenkins caught the eye of a boxing trainer while working out at a gym. Jenkins would go on to a 5-1 professional record before exploring other interests.

1995 (Senior)

Jenkins played in nine games in 1995, serving as backup defensive tackle to Jason Peter. Jenkins had six tackles in 1995 (two solo), including one tackle for one yard lost and two breakups. He had one tackle against Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Pacific, Missouri, Colorado, and Iowa State and did not play against Arizona State and Washington State due to a sprained ankle, which was still slowing him down at the end of the season as well. Even though Jason was a junior college transfer in 1993, he was the first on the team to graduate and played the entire 1995 season with a degree in human development already in hand. A solid student posting a 3.18 for the year in graduate studies, Jenkins was named to the Phillips 6 Academic Honor Roll.

1994 (Junior)

Jenkins played in three games in 1994 as a backup to Terry Connealy at defensive tackle. He totaled two assisted tackles, one against West Virginia and one against Pacific.

1993 (Redshirt)

A scholarship athlete, Jenkins redshirted his first season with the Huskers.

Before Nebraska (Dodge City (Kan.) Community College)

One of two junior college recruits to commit to the Huskers in 1993 (along with tight end Eric Alford of Garden City CC), Jenkins graduated with an associate of arts degree in three semesters with nearly a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). He was able to enroll at Nebraska in January, 1993 and got an extra spring camp in with the Huskers. Jenkins was Dodge City (Kan.) Community College’s starting defensive tackle in 1991 and 1992, playing for Coach Steve Simpson. His second year, he led the team and caused two fumbles. He was a two-time selection to the first-team All-Jayhawk Conference team. Listed among the Top 100 juco recruits in the country. Jenkins helped lead the Conquistadors (the same college of 1992 Husker senior cornerback Kenny Wilhite) to a 6-5-1 record and a berth in the RC Cola Bowl.

Before College (Oakcrest High School)

Jenkins lettered in wrestling, football and baseball at Oakcrest High School in Mays Landing, N.J. Playing for Coach Dennis DiDonato, he earned all-conference honors as a nose tackle and second-team honors as a fullback. He played against fellow Husker Doug Colman, who attended Ocean City in Ventnor, N.J. He was a district champion in wrestling and placed second at state, losing only in the championship round and set a school record with 24 pins en route to a 32-1 record.

Personal

Jason is the son of Paul and Sandra Jenkins and was born July 26, 1973. He has eight brothers and three sisters. Majoring in human development, Jason was the only Husker who played in the fall of 1995 with his degree in hand as he graduate in August, 1995. Jenkins likes to play the drums.
