Career

James Sherman finished his collegiate career appearing in 46 games, starting 24 of them, while recording 212 "pancakes" (knock-down blocks), an average of 4.9 per game. He was a two-year starter at offensive guard and was a steady force on the offensive line. Sherman was a two-time first-team academic All-Big 12 pick, a second-team All-America selection and earned second-team GTE/CoSIDA All-District VII honors.

1999 (Senior)

Sherman played every game at left guard his senior seasons and was fourth on the team with 96 "pancakes", averaging 8.0 per game. Sherman had double-figure "pancakes" in three games, including a career-best 14 against Kansas State when the team had a season-best 73. He also had double-figure "pancakes" against. California (10) and Texas (13) when he led the team.

1998 (Junior)

Sherman played in every game at left guard and started all but the regular-season finale against Colorado and the Holiday Bowl game against Arizona. He was also a member of the Huskers' PAT and field goal units. He finished second to center Josh Heskew in "pancakes" with 88 (7.3 per game) and helped the Huskers rank sixth nationally in rushing, 23rd in scoring offense and 39th in total offense. Sherman had a season-best 12 "pancakes" against California. He earned first-team academic All-Big 12 honors and was nominated for academic All-America awards.

1997 (Sophomore)

Except for the two games when he was injured (knee strain), Sherman was a valuable contributor in 1997. He played in 10 games and was one of the first subs on the offensive line, after Matt Hoskinson. Sherman was also a member of the Husker PAT and field goal units. He had 21 "pancakes" on the year, including a season-best 10 against Baylor. Sherman earned honorable-mention academic All-Big 12 honors and was named to the fall semester conference honor roll. He played in the Orange Bowl against Tennessee.

1996 (Freshman)

Sherman was hampered toward the end of the season by a knee injury but still played in nine games as a reserve left guard. He helped the Huskers rank fourth nationally in both rushing and scoring. He played in the 1996 FedEx Orange Bowl against Virginia Tech.

1995 (Redshirt)

A scholarship freshman, Sherman redshirted his first year at Nebraska.

Before Nebraska (Whittier High School)

A top offensive and defensive lineman at Whittier High School, Sherman recorded 20 sacks in just 12 games during his senior season. He was picked as the lineman of the year by the Los Angeles Times for its Southeast Section, which includes all the large schools in Los Angeles County. An offensive line All-America choice by Bluechip Illustrated, he was also a SuperPrep All-American. He was named to the Tacoma News-Tribune Western 100 list and the Long Beach Press-Telegram Best in the West list. He was rated as the seventh-best offensive line prospect in the nation by SuperPrep. A two-year starter on both sides of the ball, he was all-state as a senior, voted All-CIF in Division VIII, made first-team All-Del Rio Conference and voted the league's most outstanding offensive lineman. Sherman received scholarship offers from USC, UCLA, Washington and Colorado.

Personal

The son of Tom and Patti Sherman, James was born on Oct. 23, 1977. James majored in criminal justice and earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in December of 1999. He freely gave up his spare time as he was a volunteer with the Husker Outreach Program, American Education Week and DARE. He was a Venture in Partnership Outreach Council Member, assisted with the Husker E-mail Literacy Program, was a celebrity reader for the Lincoln Public Schools, and volunteered at the Lincoln Children's Museum and worked with the UNL Shadowing Program. He was also a speaker of the Kearney Tour of Excellence. For his services, Sherman was named to the 1998 Brook Berringer Citizenship Team.
