Honors & Awards

  • Member of Two Nebraska National Championship Teams (1994, 1995)

Career

Erik Nelson joined the Huskers in 1994 after earning a scholarship on the defensive line. He redshirted his first year in Lincoln and appeared in two games where he recorded two assisted tackles and a quarterback hurry his redshirt-freshman season. However, following the 1995 season, he decided to pursue other interests. Nelson left Nebraska as a member of its back-to-back national championship teams.

Before Nebraska (Iowa City High High School)

A transfer as a sophomore from San Diego, Calif., Nelson played football at Iowa City for just three years, but earned a spot on the first unit of the Des Moines Register's Elite Team as a lineman his senior year. He earned first-team all-state honors (OG) in the coaches poll and was the runner-up for player-of-the-year. Nelson helped lead his team to a class 4A (big school) title and a No. 21 final ranking by USA Today as Iowa City went 13-0 in 1993 and 23-1 over his last two years. Also a 48-foot shot putter on the track team, Nelson chose Nebraska over Oregon State, Kansas State, Wisconsin and Iowa State. His dad, Jerry Nelson, was a standout middle guard at the University of Iowa. Erik was a member of the honor roll his senior year.
