Career

Punter Dan Hadenfeldt set a Husker school-record, averaging 44.54 yards per punt (4,632 yards on 104 punts), throughout his career. He also set a single game school-record of 57.6 yards a boot when he punted seven times for 403 yards against Colorado in 1999. Of Hadenfeldt's 104 career punts, 31 were downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line, 14 inside the 10-yard line and 11 inside the five-yard line. For his efforts, he signed with the New England Patriots following the 2001 NFL Draft as a free agent.

2000 (5th-Year Senior)

Hadenfeldt and fellow senior Jason Schwab were two bonus "recruits" for Nebraska in 2000, as both were awarded a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. The good news came just a week before the 2000 NFL combine. Hadenfeldt, the only player to participate in two Hula Bowls, made good use of his extra year, posting a 43.8 average, which ranked eighth nationally and second in the Big 12. He had a season-best punt of 62 yards against Oklahoma. Hadenfeldt earned first-team All-Big 12 honors by the league coaches and the Houston Chronicle and earned second-team honors from the AP, The Sporting News and the Dallas Morning News for his efforts. He was also named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List.

1999 (Senior)

Hadenfeldt became the third consecutive punter to break the Husker single-season record, following Bill Lafleur's 44.94 in 1998 and Jess Kosch's 44.70 in 1997 with a then-school-record 44.98 average in 1999. His placement was incredible as Hadenfeldt earned second-team All-Big 12 honors, leading NU to a No. 12 ranking in net punting (39.4). Even though it was his first year as the starting punter, Hadenfeldt placed 26 of his 65 punts inside the 20, plus he had eight touchbacks and six fair catches (one inside the 20). His total did not include one punt returned to the 20. In all, Hadenfeldt forced the opponent to start its series on or inside the 20, 35 times. Fourteen of his punts pinned the opponent inside the 10-yard line. In nine of 13 games, Hadenfeldt averaged better than 40.0 yards per punt. The best punt of his career came against California when he booted the pigskin a whopping 73 yards.

After being nominated four times, Hadenfeldt finally earned Big 12 Specialty Teams Player-of-the-Week honors for his school-record performance at Colorado. He had seven punts for a career-high 403 yards, breaking a 38-year old record for average (57.6, previous best was 57.33 by Dennis Claridge against Syracuse in 1961). Hadenfeldt pinned Colorado inside the 20-yard line five times, tying his career best (he also pinned Kansas five times). His nine punts against Texas in the Big 12 Championship were a career high. Hadenfeldt suffered two blocked punts on the season, one against Iowa (last attempt) and one against Kansas. Of his 75 kickoffs, 27 went into the end zone for touchbacks, while 12 of those returned did not get past the opponent 20 yard line. NU opponents averaged 21.4 yards per return.

1998 (Junior)

As a backup, Hadenfeldt kicked off late in four games and was 0-1 on PATs (blocked against Washington).

1997 (Sophomore)

Hadenfeldt was successful on two PATs; one against Oklahoma and one against Iowa State.

1996 (Freshman)

A back injury limited his action to two games. He kicked off once against Michigan State and hit on one PAT against Colorado State.

1995 (Redshirt)

Hadenfeldt redshirted in 1995, after having back surgery.

Before Nebraska (Valley High School)

As a punter and place-kicker, Hadenfeldt earned all-state honors in 1993 and 1994. As a senior, Hadenfeldt hit on 10-of-19 field goals and posted a 35.5 punting average. His bests included a 47-yard field goal and a 64-yard punt. He also lettered three years in soccer.

Personal

The son of Jerry and Shirley Hadenfeldt, Dan was born on Aug. 7, 1976. Dan majored in business administration and earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in August of 2000. He was a two-year member of the Unity Council.
