Career

Before Nebraska (North High School)

An all-state performer on both sides of the ball, Rainey played defensive back and running back for Coach Mike Favor at North High School. A SuperPrep, Schutt and Blue Chip Illustrated All-American defensive back, Rainey was also named to the Scholastic Prep Gatorade Circle of Champions Top 100 list. He had an impressive senior campaign. As a defensive back, Rainey made 72 tackles and picked off nine passes, four of which he returned for scores. He also averaged 23 yards a catch as a wideout. During his junior season, Rainey intercepted eight balls and returned three for touchdowns. Rainey earned all-state honors in football in 1993 and 1994 and was a USA Today honorable-mention All-American in 1994. He was also a member of North's special teams. He selected NU over Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan State and Wisconsin. As an all-state basketball player, several schools, including Syracuse, recruited Rainey to the hardwood. He averaged 25 points per game as north was ranked No. 1 in the state.
