Career

Ryan Terwilliger ended his NU playing career with 76 tackles (31 solo), nine tackles resulting in 30 yards lost, three sacks, two forced fumbles and eight quarterback hurries.

1996 (Senior)

Terwilliger was an excellent athlete who, coupled with Terrell Farley, gave Nebraska great talent and depth at the Will linebacker position his senior year. Terwilliger backed up Farley, but saw quality playing time, playing in 11 games (starting five), only missing the Kansas State game. He had 20 tackles (five solo), two tackles for a total of 10-yards lost, a career-best seven yard sack against Oklahoma, a forced one fumble and had two quarterback hurries. Terwilliger earned an academic All-Big 12 honorable-mention and was named a Nebraska Lifter-of-the-Year Finalist. In the 1996 Orange Bowl against Virginia Tech, Terwilliger recorded one solo tackle.

1995 (Junior)

Terwilliger had a solid junior season and finished as the team's ninth-leading tackler. Playing in every game, Terwilliger started the first six at Will linebacker, then gave way to junior college transfer Terrell Farley. Terwilliger had 35 tackles in 1995 (18 solo), including four tackles for six yards lost, one forced fumble and four quarterback hurries. He tied his career-best with seven tackles against Arizona State and Missouri and had one tackle for loss in each of the first two. A two-time member of the GTE Academic All-District VII Team, Terwilliger was a first-team Phillips 66 Academic All-Big Eight selection. He had one assisted tackle in the Fiesta Bowl.

1994 (Sophomore)

A member of the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District VII team, Terwilliger was an important contributor to the 1994 team on the field. He served as the backup to Butkus finalist and consensus All-American Ed Stewart at Will linebacker. Playing in every game, Terwilliger recorded 19 tackles, had three tackles for 14 yards lost, including two sacks for eight yards lost and two quarterback hurries. He had a career-high seven tackles against Kansas (second best on the team) and five times had two in a game. His sacks came in the first two contests of the season, a two-yard stop against West Virginia and a six-yard sack against Texas Tech. His only tackle in the Kansas State game was a big one as he pegged J.J. Smith for a six-yard loss on a short pass in the third quarter. K-State subsequently punted. In the 1995 Orange Bowl against Miami, Terwilliger saw extensive playing time and recorded one assisted tackle. Terwilliger was named to the 1994 Phillips 66 Academic Honor Roll.

1993 (Freshman)

Terwilliger played in six games as a reserve weakside linebacker, making two tackles against North Texas.

1992 (Freshman)

A scholarship athlete, Terwilliger redshirted his first year.

Grant High School

Playing for Grant High School (formerly called Perkins County) in Class C-1 (Nebraska's third-largest class), Terwilliger earned all-class, all-state honors in 1991 as a defensive end/outside linebacker, and was named the C-1 defensive player-of-the-year in 1991. As a junior in 1990, he was C-1 all-state and second-team all-class all-state as a tight end. On offense, Terwilliger split time between tight end and running back, and in his two last years, rushed for 1,794 yards, caught 27 passes for 682 yards and scored 40 touchdowns. On defense, he had 133 tackles as a junior and senior, despite an injury-plagued senior year. He played his high school football for his father, Coach Marlin Terwilliger, and also a standout on Grant's basketball team. He was a member of the National Honor Society.

Personal

The son of Marlin and Barbara Terwilliger, Ryan was born on May 31, 1973. He was a keynote speaker at the Grant National Championship Celebration and also volunteered with the Pacific Pals Youth Camp, the Husker Kids Campus Recreation Center and with Merry Makers. He is married to the former Judy Rischel.
