Career

Monte Christo would end his Husker career appearing in 18 games (starting one). He'd rush 64 times for 275 yards and three touchdowns, and completed 19 passes for 261 yards and two scores.

1998 (Senior)

Christo was the No. 3 quarterback behind Bobby Newcombe and Eric Crouch entering his senior season, but earned the start against Texas while Newcombe and Crouch battled through injuries (partially torn knee ligament and hip injury, respectively). Crouch was well enough he could've started the Texas game, but Christo earned the start as he relieved Crouch the week before against Missouri and rallied Nebraska to two second-half touchdowns to beat the Tigers 20-13. Christo had a career-best throw to Tracey Wistrom against UAB when he completed a 63-yard pass for a score, his second touchdown pass of the season. His first coming against California when he'd toss for a five-yard score to Shevin Wiggins. Christo also had a career-best run when he scampered for 42 yards against Kansas. He would score twice against Missouri, also a career-best 20 carries for 67 yards, and once against Iowa State. Against Arizona in the 1999 Holiday Bowl, Christo would rush twice for 11 yards.

1997 (Junior)

Christo suffered a cracked vertebrae during fall camp and missed the first game (did not require surgery). He saw action in five games and had two rushes for 17 yards on the season, all coming in the Iowa State game. Christo earned honorable-mention All-Big 12 honors and was named to the conference fall honor roll. He played in the FedEx Orange Bowl, but did not have any statistics.

1996 (Sophomore)

Christo played in five games, rushing three times for 35 yards, including a season-best of 18 against Missouri. Christo rushed twice for 24 yards against Missouri and had one carry for 11 yards against Iowa State. He did not throw any passes.

1995 (Medical Redshirt)

Christo missed all of 1995 spring practice after having lower back disc surgery, then suffered a season-ending knee injury on the first day of fall camp. He applied for and received a medical redshirt.

1994 (Freshman)

After an excellent performance in the Nebraska Shrine Bowl game and because of a need for QBs, Christo was the only freshman walk-on invited to report early with the varsity before the start of school in the fall of 1994. After an impressive fall camp, he made the 80-man travel roster to the Kickoff Classic as the No. 4 quarterback, but tore a ligament in his thumb (throwing hand) on Aug. 31, during practice, which team doctors surgically repaired. He had just returned to practice Oct. 17 before he was injured again. He was expected to sit out that season as a redshirt, but after Tommie Frazier went out with blood clots, and Brook Berringer was trying to heal cracked ribs and a deflated lung, third string quarterback Matt Turman went out of the Missouri road game with what appeared to be a separated shoulder. At that point, Christo, the only quarterback on the 60-man travel roster left on the sidelines, was forced to finish the last two minutes of the game. He did not have an opportunity to play in the next four games or the Orange Bowl win over Miami. He did not throw any passes or rush the ball.

Kearney High School

Christo was a first-team Super-State and All-Nebraska defensive back at Kearney High School and was also the starting quarterback, running the option, his junior and senior year. In the 1994 Nebraska Shrine Game, Christo was the MVP for the South team, as he ran for 76 yards and passed for 71 in the South's 19-0 victory. He also lettered three times in basketball and track and played baseball in the summer for the Kearney Legion team. He was a 4.0 honor roll student for four years and Homecoming King.

Personal

The son of Hilary and Tim Christo, Monte was born July 10, 1976. Monte majored in biological sciences and earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in December of 1998.
