Career

Darren Schmadeke served as a backup left corner in 1995, after playing as a reserve at that position in 1994. Schmadeke played wingback in 1992, but had no receptions. He recorded 12 tackles in his career, one unassisted stop in 1993, nine (eight solo) in 1994 and two in 1995 (both solo). He also had a breakup and an interception in 1995 and one breakup in 1994.

1995 (Senior)

Schmadeke served as a backup left cornerback to Michael Booker and Mike Fullman. He played in nine games, and had two solo tackles, one breakup and an interception against Pacific. Both of his tackles were also against the Tigers. He did not play against Oklahoma State and Washington State.

1994 (Junior)

Schmadeke served as the backup left cornerback to honorable-mention All-American Barron Miles. Playing in seven games, Schmadeke had nine tackles, eight of them solo, and one pass breakup. The junior was the team's leading tackler in extensive playing time against Pacific. In that game, he posted a career-best eight tackles (seven solo). His breakup came against Texas Tech. A veterinary science major, Schmadeke posted a 3.0 cumulative GPA and was named to the Phillips 66 Academic Honor Roll.

1993 (Sophomore)

Schmadeke switched from wingback in the spring and played in three games at left corner behind Barron Miles and had one unassisted tackle against North Texas.

1992 (Freshman)

Played in two games as a wingback, but did not have any receptions.

1991 (Redshirt)

A walk-on athlete, Schmadeke redshirted his first year.

Albion High School

Schmadeke lettered 11 times at Albion, four in football and track, two in wrestling and once in basketball. Played running back, free safety, linebacker and punted for Coach Arnold Johnson. He rushed for 1,900 career yards and recorded 61 tackles (49 solo). He was injured as a senior and missed four games but earned all-conference and all-state honors as a running back in 1989. He set the school record in the 100-meter dash at 10.44 and won state in the C-1 100 and 200 meters and was a member of the school's championship 4x100-meter relay. Schmadeke was a National Honor Society member, the president of his junior class and earned honorable-mention all-state honors in wrestling.

Personal

The son of Ralph and Debbie Schmadeke, Darren and his twin brother Damon (walk-on squad member in 1991 that played in 1992 and 1993) were born in Ventura, Calif., on Feb. 1973. Darren majored in veterinary science and earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in December of 1995. He worked in a veterinary clinic during his senior summer year. The Schmadeke's great grandfather, Adam D. Kohl, was a member of NU's 1921-22 football team and a great uncle, Lloyd Schmadeke, was a pitcher for the baseball team, lettering in 1937-39.
