Member of Nebraska’s 1994 National Championship Team
1994 (Junior)
Nebraska’s first letterman from Australia, Brett Popplewell lettered as a receiver for the Huskers in 1992 and 1993. He was also a contributor on Nebraska’s 1994 national championship team. He graduated from Nebraska in 1995, but he was not on NU’s 1995 roster.
He played in 22 career games for the Huskers. Following his Nebraska career, Popplewell signed with the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe, but he suffered a skull fracture prior to the season and did not play professionally.
As a junior in 1994, Popplewell was a split end and special teams contributor for the Huskers. He did not record a catch on the season, but he played in six games and registered one special teams tackle. His perimeter blocking also helped the Huskers win the NCAA rushing title. He was limited by a broken finger during Nebraska’s 24-17 win over Miami in the 1995 Federal Express Orange Bowl national championship game. He did not earn a varsity letter in 1994.
1993 (Sophomore)
Popplewell entered the 1993 fall season as Nebraska’s No. 3 wingback behind Abdul Muhammad and David Seizys. Popplewell played in nine regular-season games for the Big Red as a sophomore, hauling in a 14-yard reception in a season-opening win over North Texas. He missed games with Oklahoma State and Iowa State because of injuries. He played in the 1994 Federal Express Orange Bowl against Florida State.
1992 (Redshirt Freshman)
Popplewell earned a scholarship and a varsity letter in his second season in Lincoln after playing in seven games for the Big Eight champion Huskers. He helped Nebraska capture the Big Eight rushing title with his solid perimeter blocking. The Big Red earned a trip to the 1993 Federal Express Orange Bowl to face Florida State. Popplewell did not have a reception on the season.
1991 (Freshman)
A walk-on, Popplewell redshirted in his first season at Nebraska.
Carey Grammar Prep School
Popplewell earned two letters in football, three in track, four in tennis and four as a member of his school’s Australian Rules football team. In his career as a wide receiver, Popplewell caught 101 passes for 2,602 yards and 38 touchdowns. He earned All-Victorian and All-Australian honors. He was the Victoria Player of the Year in 1990.
Personal
The son of Gary and Pam Popplewell, Brett was born in Melbourne, Australia. He was an accounting major at Nebraska.
