1993 (Senior)
Austin Wertz entered the 1993 season as Nebraska’s No. 3 Sam linebacker behind Ernie Beler and Lorenzo Brinkley. Wertz, a 5-11, 200-pounder from McClave, Colo., owned Nebraska’s No. 2 strength index (1,701) behind only Donta Jones. He missed Nebraska’s first four games of the season with an injury before returning to action against Oklahoma State. He played in six of NU’s final seven regular-season games to help the Huskers secure the Big Eight title and a trip to the 1994 Federal Express Orange Bowl national championship game against Florida State. He finished the season with six total tackles, including two for five yards in losses.
In his career, Wertz played 18 games and earned two varsity letters. He totaled 10 tackles, including two tackles for five yards lost.
1992 (Junior)
Wertz played eight games and traveled to the 1993 Federal Express Orange Bowl after helping the Huskers win the Big Eight championship. A reserve strong safety, Wertz finished the season with four tackles, including one solo, on his way to earning his first varsity letter.
1991 (Sophomore)
Wertz played in three games at strong safety for the Huskers but did not record a tackle.
1990 (Redshirt)
Wertz redshirted in his second season at Nebraska.
1989 (Freshman)
A cornerback on the Nebraska JV team, Wertz registered three tackles, two pass breakups and one interception, which he returned 20 yards for a touchdown.
McClave High School
Wertz played quarterback and safety for Coach Ron Conrad at McClave High School in Colorado. He was the leading rusher in Class 1-A (smallest in the state) with 1,500 yards as a senior. He earned all-state honors his junior and senior seasons and was the MVP of the Colorado six/eight-man all-state game. He also lettered four times in both basketball and track.

The son of Lee and Diane Wertz, Austin has a sister, Marka. He was a physical education major at Nebraska.
