1992 (Senior)
A three-time letterman, Tom Werner helped the Huskers to a second straight Big Eight championship as a senior wingback for Nebraska. The 5-10, 170-pounder from Tilden, Neb., was an alternate behind Vincent Hawkins and Abdul Muhammad for a Big Red team that advanced to the 1993 Federal Express Orange Bowl to play Florida State. Nebraska also won the NCAA rushing title for the second consecutive season by averaging 328.3 yards per game, while ranking second in scoring (38.8 ppg).
1991 (Junior)
Werner earned his second varsity letter after playing in three games as a reserve wingback for the Big Red. He hauled in one reception for 11 yards against Missouri. The Huskers won the Big Eight title and advanced to the 1992 Federal Express Orange Bowl to face Miami. The Big Red won the NCAA rushing title by averaging 353.2 yards per game. Nebraska also ranked third nationally in both total offense (506.5 ypg) and scoring (41.3 ppg).
1990 (Sophomore)
Werner played in four games and registered two rushing attempts for four yards for the Huskers. He also saw action for the Nebraska junior varsity team, catching one pass for 15 yards, while adding one carry for one yard.
1989 (Redshirt)
Werner redshirted in his second season as a Husker.
1988 (Freshman)
A walk-on, Werner played as a reserve wingback of the NU junior varsity team. He caught three passes for 41 yards and rushed once for 12 yards.
Elkhorn Valley High School
A three-time all-conference defensive back, Werner was also an all-conference running back as a senior when he rushed for 840 yards at Elkhorn Valley High School. Werner was named one of the top 20 players in Northeast Nebraska by the Norfolk Daily News, despite playing on teams with a four-year combined record of 3-33. All three of the wins came during his senior season. Werner also lettered in basketball and track.
Personal
The son of Kerry and Barbara Werner, Tom was born July 7, 1969, in Wakefield, Neb. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business and communications from Nebraska in 1993.
