Big Eight Academic Honor Roll (1990, 1991)
1991 (Senior)
Tim Johnk rushed seven times for 49 yards (7.0 ypc) as a senior fullback for the Big Eight champion Huskers. He added his only career reception for 19 yards and contributed two kickoff returns for 19 more yards. He contributed to Nebraska’s run to the 1992 Federal Express Orange Bowl against Miami. Johnk helped the Big Red claim its third NCAA rushing title in a four-year span by averaging 353.2 yards per game. The Huskers also ranked third nationally in scoring (41.3 ppg) and total offense (506.5 ypg). Johnk also claimed his second spot on the Phillips 66 Big Eight Academic Honor Roll.
A three-time letterman, Johnk played in 34 career games for the Big Red, totaling 161 rushing yards and one touchdown on 26 carries. He added one reception for 19 yards and four kickoff returns for 45 yards to total 325 all-purpose yards. He added five career tackles.
1990 (Junior)
Nebraska’s No. 3 fullback behind Lance Lewis and Omar Soto, Johnk was also a valuable special teams player for the Huskers. Johnk played in all 11 regular-season games and the 1991 Florida Citrus Bowl against Georgia Tech. During the season, he rushed for 74 yards on 14 carries (5.3 ypc) while notching the only touchdown of his career from 13 yards out against Northern Illinois. He helped the Huskers rank second nationally in rushing offense (340.0 ypg) and sixth in scoring (37.5 ppg). On special teams he was credited with four tackles. He was also named to the Phillips 66 Big Eight Academic Honor Roll.
1989 (Sophomore)
Johnk earned his first varsity letter as NU’s No. 3 fullback behind seniors Bryan Carpenter and Sam Schmidt. Johnk played in all 11 games and was a valuable special teams player. He recorded four carries for 27 yards on the season. He helped the Huskers earn a trip to the 1990 Sunkist Fiesta Bowl against Florida State. The Big Red won the NCAA rushing title by averaging 375.3 yards per game, while ranking second nationally in scoring (44.7 ppg) and third in total offense (513.3 ypg).
1988 (Redshirt)
Johnk redshirted in his second season at Nebraska, while the Huskers captured the Big Eight Conference title.
1987 (Freshman)
A walk-on to the Nebraska program, Johnk became the starting fullback for Coach Shane Thorell’s Husker junior varsity team. He finished the five-game season as the team’s fourth-leading rusher with 94 yards on 24 carries. He also played in his first varsity game against Iowa State, carrying one time for 11 yards against the Cyclones.
Schuyler Central High School
A Bally All-American and an all-class, all-state selection for Coach Bill Kucera as a senior at Schuyler Central High School. He rushed for 2,175 yards in leading the Warriors to a 13-0 record and the 1986 Class B state title. Johnk finished his three-year high school career with 4,026 rushing yards. A two-time honorable-mention all-state pick in basketball, Johnk also lettered in track and was an honor roll student for three years. He visited Wyoming, Morningside and Nebraska-Omaha before choosing to walk on at Nebraska.
Personal
The son of Ron and Joyce Johnk, Tim has a younger sister. He was a physical education/elementary education major. A long-time high school football coach in Nebraska, Johnk has been the head coach at Omaha Creighton Prep since 2017. He also coached at Omaha Gross from 1992 to 1999 and from 2006 to 2016.
