Phillips 66 Big Eight Academic Honor Roll (1991)
1991 (Senior)
Shane Geiken (pronounced GI-ken) earned his third varsity letter as a weakside linebacker alongside Jeff Anderson and Paul Wightman. Geiken, a 6-2, 220-pound senior from Gothenburg, Neb., played seven regular-season games and totaled 11 tackles to help Nebraska to a Big Eight title and a trip to the 1992 Federal Express Orange Bowl. He added one unassisted tackle against Miami in the bowl game. Geiken also earned a spot on the Phillips 66 Big Eight Academic Honor Roll.
A three-time letterman, Geiken played 20 games in his Husker career and totaled 22 tackles. He also played in three Big Red bowl games.
1990 (Junior)
Geiken played in seven regular-season and recorded five tackles to earn his second varsity letter. He also competed against Georgia Tech in the1991 Florida Citrus Bowl.
1989 (Sophomore)
Geiken earned his first varsity letter after totaling six tackles through six regular-season games. He also played in the 1990 Sunkist Fiesta Bowl against Florida State.
1988 (Redshirt)
Geiken redshirted in his second season as a Huskers, while Nebraska captured the Big Eight championship.
1987 (Freshman)
A walk-on from Gothenburg, Geiken was a reserve inside linebacker on Coach Shane Thorell’s Husker junior varsity team. Geiken finished as the squad’s sixth-leading tackler with 19 total stops, including two for losses. Geiken also served as the JV’s starting punter, averaging 33.7 yards on 17 punts.
Gothenburg High School
A three-year letterman at quarterback, inside linebacker and punter for Coach Pat Novacek, Geiken was an all-state linebacker and the conference player of the year as a senior at Gothenburg. An all-around athlete, he also lettered three times in basketball and four times in track. As a senior in 1987, Geiken qualified for the state track meet in four events – shot put, pole vault, 400 and 1,600-meter relays.
Personal
The son of Norman and Colleen Geiken, Shane was born in Gothenburg, Neb. He has two brothers, Wade and Todd. Geiken was a business administration major at Nebraska.
