1992 (Senior)
After a strong spring, Joel Cornwell entered fall camp at the No. 3 spot on Nebraska’s depth chart behind Tony Veland and Mike Grant. An outstanding athlete, The 6-0, 185-pound senior from Carrollton, Mo., owned the best marks in the squat, clean and pro agility run among Nebraska’s quarterbacks. Cornwell played four games for the Huskers at quarterback and completed 1-of-4 passes for four yards. He also threw an interception. He also rushed two times for five yards, with his five-yard gain coming against Middle Tennessee State. The Big Red won the Big Eight title and advanced to the 1993 Federal Express Orange Bowl to face Florida State. The Huskers won the NCAA rushing title for the second straight season by averaging 328.2 yards per game, while ranking second nationally in scoring (38.8 ppg).

A two-time letterman, Cornwell played nine career varsity games at quarterback for the Huskers, rushing six times for 60 yards (10.0 ypc), while completing 1-of-4 passes for four yards.

1991 (Junior)
Cornwell earned his first varsity letter as a reserve quarterback for the Big Red. He played in three regular-season games, rushing three times for 36 yards. Nebraska won the Big Eight championship and earned a trip to the 1992 Federal Express Orange Bowl to face Miami. The Huskers also won the NCAA rushing title by averaging 353.2 yards per game, while ranking third nationally in both total offense (506.5 ypg) and scoring (41.3 ppg).

1990 (Sophomore)
A non-lettered reserve, Cornwell saw action in two varsity games and rushed one time for a 19-yard gain. Nebraska earned a trip to the 1991 Florida Citrus Bowl to face Georgia Tech. He also played for the Husker junior varsity team, rushing six times for 34 yards while completing 5-of-13 passes for 45 yards.

1989 (Redshirt Freshman)
The starting quarterback for the Nebraska JV team, Cornwell completed 12-of-27 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns while throwing three interceptions. He also rushed 32 times for 127 yards and four TDs.

1988 (Redshirt)
A walk-on, Cornwell redshirted in his first season at Nebraska. The Big Red won the Big Eight championship.

Carrollton High School
Cornwell played defensive back and receiver in addition to quarterback for Coach Stan Kee at Carrollton High School in Missouri. Cornwell led the suburban St. Louis school to an 11-1 record his senior season. An all-around athlete, Cornwell was also an all-conference basketball player and a state qualifier in track.

Personal
The son of Ken and Joyce Cornwell, Joel was born in Tecumseh, Neb. He has two older sisters. He was a social science education major at Nebraska.
