Career
The Ponca, Nebraska native who came to NU as a walk on proved his talent during his junior season and continued his success throughout his final year with the Huskers after receiving a scholarship.
1993 (Senior)
Following a breakout junior season, Armstrong started in 10 games his senior season going for 145 total receiving yards averaging 13.2 yards per catch. Armstrong's first touchdown reception came in the second game of the year against Texas Tech. He caught a 5 yard pass from Tommie Frazier in the third quarter in route to a 55-27 win over the Red Raiders. Armstrong's success continued, scoring 5 touchdowns throughout the Husker's undefeated regular season. In NU's 1,000th game (and 100th vs. Kansas) Armstrong went 8 yards on a catch from Frazier to give Nebraska a 2nd quarter lead against the Jayhawks. He was the leading receiver helping NU get the 21-20 road win over KU. Armstrong also had scores in wins over Iowa State as well as a 31 yard reception against the UCLA Bruins.
1992 (Junior)
Coming off a season with minimal playing time, Armstrong put his name in the record books for his performance throughout his junior season. Late in Nebraska's first game of the season against Utah, Armstrong caught an 11-yard pass from Mike Grant scoring his first career touchdown off of his first career reception. He caught a 7-yard pass for a score in the Arizona State game from Grant; and an 8-yarder from Tommie Frazier vs. Oklahoma State. After not scoring against Missouri, he scored on a 5-yard pass against No. 8 Colorado. To open the game against No. 13 Kansas he caught a 36 yard reception for a score that gave the Husker's a 14-0 lead. That would mark Armstrong's sixth consecutive game with a touchdown reception setting a Nebraska, Big-Eight, and NCAA record at the time. Later in the game against the Jayhawks, he caught a 13 yard pass around midfield, finishing the day with a career-high three catches for 60 yards. His performance against KU earned him the title of Big Eight Player-of-the-Week. Unfortunately, Armstrong suffered a slight knee injury in the Kansas game and did not travel to Iowa State the following week. However, he was back for the final two games of the season, catching a 24 yard touchdown pass against Oklahoma. With that TD reception, Armstrong tied the Nebraska tight end record. He had the best touchdown reception rate of anyone in the Big Eight. Armstrong was also a powerful blocker with great speed, earning ESPN Block-of-the-Day honors after clearing the way to the end zone for I-back Calvin Jones against Arizona State. Armstrong also had a 1 yard touchdown reception in the Orange Bowl vs. Florida State. Following a record breaking '92 season, he received a scholarship.
