Phillips 66 Big Eight Academic Honor Roll

1991 (Senior)
An explosive talent among a bevvy of talented Big Red running backs, George Achola closed his senior season as Nebraska’s fourth-leading rusher with 240 yards and three touchdowns on just 26 carries. His 9.2 yards per carry led the Huskers. He produced a season-high 61 yards and two touchdowns on six carries in a win over Kansas. He added 58 yards and another touchdown on seven carries in a win over Kansas. A versatile athlete, Achola added two receptions for 14 yards out of the backfield on the season, while also recording eight special teams tackles – the second-most among NU’s offensive players on the year. He helped Nebraska claim a share of the Big Eight title and a trip to the 1992 Federal Express Orange Bowl. He aided NU’s push for its third NCAA rushing title in a four-year span, as the Huskers averaged 353.2 yards per game in 1991. The Big Red also ranked third nationally in both scoring (41.3 ppg) and total offense (506.5 ypg).

A two-time letterman, Achola played in 24 regular-season games as a Husker. He totaled 490 career rushing yards and six touchdowns on 65 attempts for a remarkable 7.6 yards per carry. He added two receptions for 14 yards to finish with more than 500 career all-purpose yards. A significant contributor on special teams, he totaled 12 regular-season tackles.

1990 (Junior)
Achola earned his first varsity letter as Nebraska’s sixth-leading rusher, finishing with 239 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries. His 6.6 yards per carry was the best average among the Husker I-backs. One of four Husker I-backs to record 100-yard games on the season, Achola joined Derek Brown, Leodis Flowers and Scott Baldwin in the accomplishment. Achola rushed for a career-high 127 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries in NU’s 56-0 win over Minnesota. He also scored touchdowns against Iowa State and Kansas. Achola helped the Huskers rank second nationally in rushing offense (340.0 ypg) and sixth in scoring (37.5 ppg). A special teams star, Achola tied fullback Tim Johnk for the team lead among offensive players with four special teams stops. Achola added another tackle against Georgia Tech in the 1991 Florida Citrus Bowl.

1989 (Sophomore)
Achola missed nearly the entire season with a broken leg. The non-lettered reserve played in the second varsity game of his career and registered one carry for seven yards against Kansas.

1988 (Redshirt)
Achola redshirted in his second season in Lincoln, while Nebraska captured the Big Eight championship.

1987 (Freshman)
A scholarship recruit, Achola recorded two carries for four yards in his only appearance with the Big Red varsity. He also led the Husker junior varsity team in rushing (506 yards) on a record 93 carries over five games. He also scored 36 points on six touchdowns. His best game came with 184 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown run against Waldorf Junior College.

Omaha Creighton Prep High School
A two-time all-state performer for Coach Tom Jaworski at Creighton Prep, Achola rushed for 2,348 yards and 31 touchdowns combined in 1985 and 1986 as the Junior Jays went 23-1 and won back-to-back state championships. Achola was one of three Creighton Prep graduates who played significant roles in the Big Red offense in 1991, joining tight end Daryl Leise and offensive lineman Dave Jensen.
