Senior (1992)
A three-year letterman, Chris Zyzda (pronounced ZIZ-dah) was one of the strongest Huskers on the squad during his playing days at Nebraska. The Sioux City, Iowa, native ranked No. 2 on the team with a squat of 594 pounds during winter conditioning before his senior year, while tying for seventh on the team in the clean (357 pounds).
He was a reserve left guard as a senior and helped the Huskers to their eighth NCAA rushing title in 13 years, as NU averaged 328.2 yards per game. The Big Eight champion Huskers finished with a 9-3 overall record that included a trip to the Orange Bowl and a journey to Tokyo, Japan, to take on Kansas State in the regular-season finale.
Junior (1991)
As a junior, the 6-2, 290-pounder played in nine of 11 regular-season contests as a reserve left guard behind All-Big Eight pick Erik Wiegert and T.J. Slansky. Zyzda missed only the Colorado and Kansas games. He helped Nebraska capture its seventh NCAA rushing title in a 12-year span, racking up 353.2 yards per game on the ground.
Sophomore (1990)
Zyzda earned his first letter as a Husker by playing in four games as a reserve behind All-Big Eight pick Will Shields, Wiegert and Dave Jensen.
Redshirt (1989)
Zyzda redshirted in his second season as a Husker.
Freshman (1988)
After walking on to the Nebraska program, Zyzda became the starting right guard on the junior varsity team by mid-season and helped Coach Shane Thorell's crew to a perfect 5-0 record.
Before Nebraska (Sergeant Bluff High School)
Zyzda lettered three times for Coach Tom Stahle and earned all-conference and All-Northwester Iowa honors as a senior. Zyzda helped lead Sergeant Bluff to a 9-1 record in his final season. He also lettered in basketball and track.
Personal
The son of Jim and Gladys Zyzda, Chris was born July 29, 1970, in Sioux City, Iowa. He has two older brothers.
