1991 (Senior)
Bill Ziegelbein (pronounced ZEE-gul-bine) split time at center with junior Jim Scott in 1991. The 6-4, 275-pounder senior played 11 regular-season games with seven starts to help Nebraska capture the Big Eight title while claiming its third NCAA rushing title in four years by averaging 353.2 yards per game in 1991. The Big Red also ranked third nationally in both scoring (41.3 ppg) and total offense (506.5 ypg).
A two-time letterman, Ziegelbein played 24 career games with seven starts as a Husker. He also played in the 1992 Federal Express Orange Bowl against Miami and the 1991 Florida Citrus Bowl against Georgia Tech.
1990 (Junior)
Ziegelbein played in 10 of NU’s 11 regular-season games as David Edeal’s backup at center, missing only the season opener against Baylor. Ziegelbein also saw action against Georgia Tech in the 1991 Florida Citrus Bowl. Nebraska ranked second in rushing offense (340.0 ypg) and sixth in scoring (37.5 ppg).
1989 (Sophomore)
Ziegelbein played three games as a non-lettered reserve at center in 1989. The Big Red won the NCAA rushing title by averaging 375.3 yards per game, while ranking second nationally in scoring (44.7 ppg) and third in total offense (513.3 ypg).
1988 (Redshirt)
Ziegelbein redshirted in his second season as a Husker, while Nebraska won the Big Eight championship.
1987 (Freshman)
A walk-on, Ziegelbein was the starting center for Coach Shane Thorell’s Husker junior varsity team.
Polk-Hordville High School
Ziegelbein starred as an eight-man football player at Polk-Hordville High School as a senior in 1986. He was inducted into Nebraska’s Eight-Man Football Hall of Fame in 2025. Ziegelbein was also the valedictorian of his high school class.
Personal
The son of Kenneth and Shirley Ziegelbein, Bill was born Oct. 29, 1968 in Central City, Neb. He earned his bachelor’s degree as a mechanical engineering major from Nebraska and went on to a career as a mechanical engineer at Goodyear in Lincoln. He passed away in a motorcycle accident near White River, S.D., on Aug. 8, 2013. His stepson, Josiah Allick was a men’s basketball forward at Nebraska in 2023-24. His stepdaughter, Rebekah Allick, was an AVCA All-Region and All-Big Ten middle blocker for the Husker volleyball program.
