In the season opener against Utah State, he rushed three times for 47 yards on the opening drive before suffering a severe ankle sprain while scoring on a 29-yard touchdown run. The injury sidelined him for six weeks.

He returned against Missouri, carrying the ball five times for 28 yards on his first series back. However, he separated his shoulder while scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run, forcing him to miss another two weeks. Baldwin made his second comeback of the season against Iowa State. Nebraska won the Big Eight championship and earned a trip to the 1992 Federal Express Orange Bowl to face Miami. The Huskers also won the NCAA rushing title by averaging 353.2 yards per game, while ranking third nationally in both total offense (506.5 ypg) and scoring (41.3 ppg).

Baldwin finished the season as Nebraska’s second-leading rusher, gaining 579 yards and scoring five touchdowns on 92 carries. He started the Citrus Bowl against Georgia Tech, rushing eight times for 21 yards. His season began with a strong performance off the bench in the opener, when he provided a spark for the Husker offense by rushing for 92 yards and scoring the game's only touchdown in a 13–0 victory.
