1990 (Senior)
A two-year letterman as an alternate at cornerback for the Huskers, Jon Crippen played nine games at left corner behind first-round NFL Draft pick Bruce Pickens as a senior in 1990. He recorded nine tackles, including four solos, while hauling in the only interception of his career in Nebraska’s 56-0 shutout of Minnesota. Crippen saw the first bowl action of his career against Georgia Tech in the 1991 Florida Citrus Bowl, when he recorded one assisted tackle. He helped the Blackshirts rank seventh nationally in scoring defense (13.4 ppg) and total defense (263.5 ypg).
In his career, Crippen played 27 regular-season games and totaled 26 tackles (17 solos), while adding one interception and one pass breakup.
1989 (Junior)
Crippen earned his first varsity letter as the alternate left corner behind Bruce Pickens. Crippen played in nine regular-season games, missing the battles with Colorado and Oklahoma, while recording 12 tackles (10 solos). He produced season highs with four tackles (all solos) against both Minnesota and Kansas State. The Huskers went on to face Florida State in the Sunkist Fiesta Bowl. As a team, Nebraska ranked eighth nationally in total defense (274.1 ypg) on the season.
1988 (Sophomore)
Crippen played six games as a reserve at right corner behind Charles Fryar and Tahaun Lewis. Crippen recorded five tackles and a pass breakup. He had a season-high three stops against Kansas State. Nebraska went on to win the Big Eight title and advance to the 1989 Orange Bowl against Miami. Crippen helped NU’s defense rank sixth nationally in passing defense (134.8 ypg) and seventh in total defense (262.8 ypg).
1987 (Redshirt Freshman)
Crippen split time between the varsity and junior varsity teams. He saw action in three games for the Big Red but did not record any statistics. On the JV team, Crippen totaled 16 tackles, a team-leading two interceptions and one pass breakup.
1986 (Redshirt)
Crippen redshirted in his first season at Nebraska.
Houston Westfield High School
A three-year starter and a two-time all-district selection for Coach Ron Anders, Crippen helped lead Westfield to the district finals in the 1985 Class 5A Texas playoffs. He also lettered three times in track as part of school-record setting mile and sprint medley relay teams.
Personal
The son of Jack and Phyllis Crippen, Jon was born in Wichita, Kan. He has one brother and one sister. He was a speech communication major at Nebraska.
