1986 (Senior)
An All-American on and off the field for Nebraska a senior in 1986, Tom Welter captured first-team Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America while adding third-team All-America accolades as an offensive tackle from Football News. Welter helped pave the way for a Nebraska offense that ranked second nationally in rushing (305.5 ypg) and scoring (37.8 ppg). The first-team All-Big Eight selection both on the field and in the classroom helped lead the Big Red to a 10-2 record that included a 30-15 win over LSU in the Sugar Bowl.

Following his collegiate career, Welter played in the Hula Bowl before signing an NFL contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. He started three games as a rookie in 1987. The team relocated to Phoenix in 1988, and Welter was on the roster but did not appear in another NFL game.

1985 (Junior)
Welter helped power Nebraska to its fourth NCAA rushing title in a span of six seasons while earning his first varsity letter at offensive tackle in 1985. The 6-5, 280-pound right tackle helped the Big Red to a nation-leading 374.3 rushing yards per game.

1984 (Sophomore)
Welter earned a spot on the roster but did not letter in 1984.

1983 (Redshirt)
Welter took a redshirt season while the Huskers led the nation in scoring (52.0 ppg) and rushing offense (401.7 ypg) on their way to an unbeaten regular season and a Big Eight title.

1982 (Freshman)
A 225-pound all-state from South Dakota, Welter played tackle for the 5-0 Nebraska freshman team in 1992. He alternated with Brad Johnson at right tackle.

Yankton High School
An all-state selection in South Dakota as both an offensive and defensive tackle for 1985 National Coach of the Year Max Hawk at Yankton High School, Welter also lettered twice in wrestling and track.

Personal
The son of Delvin and Sally Welter, Tom has four brothers and two sisters. He was born in Yankton, S.D. He was a business administration major at Nebraska. His nickname was “Spud”.
