1986 (Senior)
Nelson earned his second varsity letter but did not record any stats. He helped lead the Huskers to the 1987 Sugar Bowl, where Nebraska defeated LSU Tigers football, 30-15. The Huskers finished the season ranked second nationally in rushing offense, averaging 305.5 rushing yards per game, and third in scoring with 37.8 points per contest.
1985 (Junior)
Nelson lettered as a reserve in 1985 after making six game appearances, in which he rushed five times for 38 yards. Nebraska finished 9-3 and earned a berth in the 1986 Fiesta Bowl against Michigan, averaging 472.5 total yards and 36.2 points per game.
1984 (Sophomore)
A non-lettered reserve while he converted to wingback. Nebraska finished 10-2 and defeated LSU, 28-10, in the 1985 Sugar Bowl. The Huskers averaged 427.5 total yards and 32.6 points per game.
1983 (Redshirt)
Nelson Redshirted in his second season as a Husker.
1982 (Freshman)
Nelson was a walkon I-back and ended up as the freshman team’s fourth leading rusher, carrying 24 times for 161 yards, a 6.7 yard average and three touchdowns. He helped the Nebraska freshman team to an undefeated 5-0 record.
Omaha Tech High School
Nelson was the last competing NCAA Division I athlete out of Omaha Tech High School that closed in 1982. He was all-state and Metro Conference Federal Division MVP for Coach Tim Bond.
Personal
Ray was a criminal justice major. He is the son of Mrs. Walker, Born in April of 1964 in Omaha
