1986 (Senior)
Pernell was a non-letter winner during the 1986 season. Nebraska finished the year ranked second nationally in rushing offense, averaging 305.5 rushing yards per game, and third in scoring with 37.8 points per contest.
1985 (Junior)
Gatson suffered a severe knee injury during spring practice on April 2, 1985, after being listed first on the depth chart at wingback. He underwent reconstructive surgery eight days later and missed the season.
1984 (Sophomore)
Gatson earned his first varsity letter as a reserve wingback behind Shane Swanson and Jim Thompson. He appeared in seven games, rushing four times for 40 yards and catching one pass for 20 yards. Nebraska finished 10-2 and defeated LSU, 28-10, in the 1985 Sugar Bowl. The Huskers averaged 427.5 yards of total offense and 32.6 points per game.
1983 (Redshirt)
Gatson redshirted his second season at Nebraska.
1982 (Freshman)
Recruited as a quarterback, Gatson completed 11 of 28 passes for 131 yards with no interceptions while serving as a part-time starter for Nebraska's undefeated 5-0 freshman team. He also ranked third on the team in rushing with 188 yards and three touchdowns on 48 carries.
Omaha Central High School
Gatson was an all-state quarterback for Coach William Reed at Omaha Central High School. He was also a two-time state wrestling champion.
Personal
Gatson is the son of Alexander Gatson and has four brothers and one sister. He was born in November 1962 in Newton, Texas.
