1988 (Senior)
John Custard played eight games for the Big Eight champion Huskers as a senior in 1988. Custard, who returned to the field after missing the entire 1987 season with a knee injury, recorded seven tackles, including six solos, from his left cornerback spot. He helped Nebraska capture the Big Eight title with an unbeaten (7-0) conference regular season on its way to an 11-2 overall record that included a trip to the 1989 Orange Bowl against Miami. The Blackshirts finished sixth nationally in pass defense (134.8 ypg) and seventh in total defense (262.8 ypg).
A two-time letterman, Custard played 19 games in his Nebraska career, totaling 12 tackles, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery.
1987 (Junior)
Custard was on the verge of winning the starting job at left cornerback in the spring of 1987 before suffering a knee injury. He underwent surgery and was lost for the 1987 season.
1986 (Sophomore)
Custard played in every game as an alternate at left cornerback behind Brian Davis. Custard totaled five tackles, broke up one pass and recovered a fumble.
1985 (Redshirt)
Custard moved from right corner to left corner in the spring of 1985 and took a redshirt season during the fall of 1985.
1984 (Freshman)
A walk-on, Custard started at right cornerback for the 4-1 Husker freshman team. He recorded 11 tackles, hauled in two interceptions and broke up three passes.
Bellevue East High School
Custard earned honorable-mention all-state recognition for Coach Bill James at Bellevue East High School. Custard was an All-Metro and all-conference performer on the gridiron before playing in the Nebraska Shrine Bowl. He was also a two-time MVP in track at Bellevue East and earned a pair of letters as a wrestler.

The son of John and Jackie Custard, John was born in Limestone, Maine. He was an economics major at Nebraska.
