1987 (Junior)
A non-letter winner in 1987, Ernest provided important depth at right tackle. Backing up Keven Lightner and Corey Bill Hudson. Ernest helped the Huskers to a 10–2 record and an appearance in the Fiesta Bowl against Florida State. Ernest helped Nebraska’s offense ranked among the nation’s elite, finishing second in total offense at 489.0 yards per game, third in rushing at 373.5 yards per game, and third in scoring at 38.5 points per game.
1986 (Sophomore)
Ernest was a non-letter winner as he served as an alternate at right tackle. He helped the Huskers reach the 1987 Sugar Bowl, where they defeated LSU Tigers football 30-15. Nebraska finished the year among the nation’s elite, ranking second in rushing offense at 305.5 yards per game and third in scoring at 37.8 points per game.
1985 (Redshirt)
Ernest redshirted in his second season at Nebraska.
1984 (Freshman)
Ernest started every freshman game at left tackle. Helping Nebraskas freshman team to a 4-1 season.
Leyton High School
Ernest played eight-man football for coach Harlin Dormann, earning All-State honors as a nose guard. He lettered four times in football and three times in track.
Personal
Jim is the son of Phyllis J. Ernest and has two brothers and one sister. Born in Dalton, Nebraska, he was an agronomy major who has maintained a 3.788 GPA.
