Career Summary
A standout, two-year starter for the Huskers. In 1974, Tom was a second team All Big 8 choice and a third team All American Football News selection. Alward teamed with Stan Hegener to give the Huskers one of the finest guard tandems in the nation. He was a three-year letterman at Nebraska. Tom was drafted by the New York Jets in 1975.
Junior (1973)
Alward was a Big 8 standout as a junior starter in 1973 and a top honors canidate for 1974.
Sophomore (1972)
Alward filled in as an outstanding reserve for Bob Wolfe and Dan Anderson in 1972. After a fine spring he landed the No. 1 left guard spot at the end of spring drills.
Freshman (1970)
Alward red-shirted in 1971 after starring with the 1970 freshman team. He came on strong in the spring and was identified as a star for the future.
Bendle (Mich.) High School
Alward was an All-County in basketball, football and baseball as well as All-State in basketball and football at Bendle High School. His prep grid coach was Bill Lewinski. He also lettered four times in baseball.
Personal
The son of Lavern and Dorothy Alward, Tom Alward was born Oct 13, 1952 in Flint, Michigan. Alward majored in Physical Education at Nebraska. His hobby was dirt bike riding and spent summers as a driver education instructor.
