1973 (Senior)
Rich was a three year starter, the greatest Husker kick scorer of all time and the NCAA record holder for PAT’s, both records have been passed. As a senior, Sanger successfully booted nine for 15 field goal attempts. Rich also handled punting chores, punting 55 times for 2,208 yards and an average of 40.1 yards per punt. Nebraska finished the season strong, ending with a 9-2-1 record and a 19-3 Cotton Bowl win over Texas.
Sanger finished his career with 157 PAT points; 63 of 68 as a sophomore, 61 of 66 as a junior and 32 of 38 as a senior.
Rich also doubled as a baseball player for the Huskers. He led the team in home runs with four and he also started every game at left field.
1972 (Junior)
Rich made 62 PAT’s on 66 attempts for a .939 percentage to break an old Nebraska average of .931. Rich also led the Big Eight in punting yards with 40.2 average on 50 kicks for 2,012 yards. The Huskers finished the season with a 9-2-1 record and a 40-6 Orange Bowl win over Notre Dame.
1971 (Sophomore)
Sanger made 63 out of 68 PATs and six field goals for 81. He also punted four times for 159 yards and an average of 39.8 yards per punt. Nebraska finished the 1971 season undefeated (13-0) and as National Champions, beating Alabama in the Orange Bowl, 38-6.
Revere High School (Ovid, Colorado)
Sanger earned 16 letters at Revere High School: four each in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was coached by Keith Sommerfeld. RIch was majoring in business administration and is the son of John and Katherine Sanger.
