1971 (Junior)
Jim and Maury Damkroger gave the Huskers two fine back-ups at fullback. Carstens saw playing time as a special teams member. The Huskers ground game produced 3,100 yards, good for third in the conference at 258.3 yards per game. Overall, the Husker offense averaged 437.7 yards and 39.1 points per game, ranking second in the Big Eight in both categories behind only Oklahoma. Nebraska finished with an undefeated record (13-0) and beat Alabama 38-6, in the National Championship game.
1970 (Sophomore)
Jim was a reserve fullback and specialty team member in 1970. Jim helped the Huskers to 5,594 yards of total offense, including 252.5 rushing yards per game and 177.8 passing yards per game.
1969 (Redshirt)
Carstens redshirted his second season at Nebraska.
1968 (Freshman)
Jim was a standout player with the ‘68 freshman team.
Fenwick High (Oak Park, Illinois)
Jim earned MVP honors at Fenwick High two years in a row and was also awarded the Chicago Tribune Golden Helmet Award under Coach Len Tyrell. He was an English major in teachers college and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Carstens.
