1972 (Senior)
Doug was a three-year starter, he ranks with 1949 All-American Tom “Train Wreck” Novak as one of the top centers in Nebraska history. Dumler was a narrow loser to Oklahoma’s Tom Brahaney for All-American honors for two years; he was drafted ahead of Brahaney, ironically by ex-Oklahoma coach Chuck Fairbanks of New England in the fifth round of the 1973 NFL Draft (108th Overall).
Dumler helped lead the Huskers to the Big Eight’s top passing attack for the second consecutive season. Nebraska also ranked fourth in the conference in rushing offense, averaging 219.3 yards per game, and finished second in total offense at 440.3 yards per game. The Husker offensive line helped power an offense that led the Big Eight in scoring, averaging 41.9 points per game.
1971 (Junior)
Doug earned All-Big Eight and All-American honorable mention during his junior season. He was nominated for Lineman-of-the-Week for his stand out game against Kansas State.
The Huskers boasted the Big Eight’s top passing attack, averaging 179.3 yards per game, while their ground game produced 3,100 yards, good for third in the conference at 258.3 yards per game. Overall, the Husker offense averaged 437.7 yards and 39.1 points per game, ranking second in the Big Eight in both categories behind only Oklahoma. Nebraska finished with an undefeated record (13-0) and beat Alabama 38-6, in the National Championship game.
1970 (Sophomore)
Doug earned his first varsity letter as a sophomore.
Doug helped the Huskers to 5594 yards of total offense, including 252.5 rushing yards per game and 177.8 passing yards per game.
1969 (Freshman)
Doug missed his freshman season with a knee injury.
Walter Lutheran High (Melrose Park, Illinois)
Doug was an All-Conference football and basketball player under Coach Warren Hoger. Doug was majoring in business administration and is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Marvin Dumler.
Dumler went on a NCAA-sponsored tour of American bases in Vietnam in June of 1972 in a group headed by Iowa State assistant coach Joe Avezzano.
Doug played five years in the NFL (1973-1977) spending time with the New England Patriots and the Minnesota Vikings. He started three games with the Patriots during the 1975 season.
