At Nebraska
Armstrong improved on a solid junior by earning First-Team All-America honors from the Football Writers Association. Armstrong also earned Second-Team All-America, Honorable Mention All-America, and First-Team All-Big 8 honors. The Huskers best game on the ground in 1968 came in a 22-6 win over Colorado in Boulder. The Husker rushed for 228 yards and accumulated 275 total yards on the day. Joe Orduna rushed for 112 yards while Dick Davis contributed another 92 yards.
Armstrong missed the 1967 spring practice season because of a knee surgery. Came back to start in the 1967 season and was one of the most versatile offensive lineman as he played both guard and center. Armstrong helped the Huskers finish first in the Big 8 Conference in passing with 154.7 yards per game and finish second overall in total yards with 317.2 yards per game.
Armstrong blocked for the third leading rusher in the conference in 1967, Dick Davis, who was First-Team All-Big 8, Honorable Mention All-America, and averaged 4.4 yards per carry. Armstrong also protected First-Team All-Big 8 performer Frank Patrick who led the conference in passing with 1,449 yards and was second in the conference in total yards with 1,427.
Armstrong took over Husker punting chores in the second game of the 1966 season and became a steady performer, averaging 39.1 yards per punt. Also backed up Jim Osberg and played well on the kick-off unit.
