Nebraska Career
An All-American on the field and in the classroom for Nebraska in 1965, Tony Jeter was a star for a strong Cornhusker club coached by Bob Devaney. Jeter started his 33rd consecutive game for the Huskers in the 1966 Orange Bowl against Alabama. He finished his illustrious NU career with 38 catches for 528 yards.
The first African-American athlete to earn academic All-America honors as a Husker, Jeter went on to play three seasons in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers from 1966 to 1968. He was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1986.
Jeter played mostly offense, but did log considerable defensive time. He was named to the American Coaches Association-TV Guide All-America team in 1965, after catching 11 passes for 158 yards as a senior.
Although slowed by an early season injury and limited to playing only on offense, Jeter earned All-Big 8 honors as a junior. He led all Husker receivers with 18 catches in 1964.
A star in the 1964 Orange Bowl game, Jeter was one of only three starters back from the 1963 Big 8 Championship team. Jeter was the top overall receiver on the 1963 squad with nine catches for 151 yards. Jeter’s touchdown reception of 65 yards from quarterback Dennis Claridge won the Minnesota game in 1963.
Before Nebraska (Weirton)
Jeter was a four-sport high school letterman at Weirton, winning all-conference and all-state honors. His high school coach was Burdell Carey.
Personal
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jeter Sr., Tony was an education major at Nebraska. His older brother, Bobby, was an All-American at Iowa.
