An NU professor, William G. Kline coached a makeshift team that was depleted because of World War I in 1918.
After one season of coaching the Huskers, Kline joined the war effort before returning to college football in 1920 as the head coach at Florida. He coached the Gators for three seasons from 1920 to 1922 and compiled a 19-8-2 record.
Following the 1923 season in Gainesville, Kline returned to Lincoln to coach the Husker men's basketball team in 1923-24 and 1924-25. He posted a 23-12 record in two seasons as the Cornhuskers' basketball team.
Following his career as a coach, Kline wrote several books on coaching techniques, including The All-American Football Coaching Course (1929), The Varsity Football Play Set, published by Coaches Institute (1933) and Football for Fans, published by the Education Athletic Foundations (1934).
Kline was a 1906 graduate of the University of Illinois.
