NU Linebacker Game Record with Four Pass Breakups vs. Missouri
Fifth-year senior Scott Shanle (pronounced SHAN-lee) completed an outstanding Nebraska career with a strong 2002 season. The former walk-on has played in every game over the past four seasons and has been Nebraska's starter at the Sam linebacker position for each of the last three seasons. Shanle was a Butkus Award watch list member and finished fourth on the team in tackles in 2002 with 71 stops.
Shanle is one of three regular senior starters on the Blackshirt defense and ranks among the top 30 in career tackles at Nebraska with 183 total stops. Shanle earned honorable-mention All-Big 12 honors from the league coaches this fall, the second straight year he has been an honorable-mention selection. Shanle graduated last week with a bachelor's degree in family and consumer science.
2002: Shanle finished his senior season with 71 tackles to rank fourth on the team. It marked the third straight season he had been among Nebraska's top five tacklers. Shanle added five tackles for loss and two sacks and hurried opposing quarterbacks six times.
Shanle recorded five games this fall with seven or more tackles, with a season-high 10 stops against McNeese State, including a 10-yard sack. He had eight stops at Oklahoma State and posted seven tackles each against Utah State, Texas A&M and Kansas State. Shanle added a five-yard sack and caused a fumble against the Wildcats. Shanle also contributed on Nebraska's punt return unit. He reached the end zone for the first time as a Husker in the season opener against Arizona State, when he returned a blocked punt six yards for a score in NU's 48-10 victory.
2001: Shanle anchored the Sam linebacker position, ranking fifth on the team in tackles with 56. His 26 solo tackles were second among linebackers and third on the squad. Shanle broke up four passes against Missouri, becoming the only non-defensive back in school history to accomplish the feat. His eight pass breakups ranked fourth on the team and tied the school single-season linebacker record with Steve Forch in 1987. Shanle accounted for eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 36 yards, including three sacks.
Shanle recorded six tackles in the season opener vs. TCU. He also recovered a fumble and had one TFL in the Huskers' 21-7 win. Against Troy State, Shanle registered one assisted tackle. Shanle turned in another six-tackle effort, logging two solo stops as the Blackshirts held No. 17 Notre Dame to only 162 yards in a 27-10 win. He made two solo stops along with two assisted tackles vs. Rice. At Missouri, Shanle earned Big 12 Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors with a team-high eight tackles, including five solo stops. He set a Nebraska record for linebackers with four pass breakups in the 38-3 victory. Shanle logged four tackles against Iowa State, including his fourth TFL of the season for minus-one yard. Shanle accounted for three tackles at Baylor, two of which were unassisted and one for a loss of five yards. The Blackshirts held the Bears to 29 yards rushing, the second-lowest output of the year by an opponent?s offense (minus 25 vs. Troy State). Shanle also recorded half a sack. Against Texas Tech, Shanle had five tackles (four solo stops) and produced two pass breakups. Shanle recorded one assisted tackle against No. 2 Oklahoma in NU's 20-10 win. With seven total tackles at Kansas, Shanle was second on the team. He also registered two TFLs for minus 18 yards, including one sack. Shanle accounted for five tackles with four solos stops against Kansas State in the Huskers' 31-21 win. Shanle broke up his eighth pass of the season versus the Buffaloes, tying a school single-season record for linebackers with eight (Steve Forch, 1987). He also made six total tackles with one solo. In the 2002 Rose Bowl vs. Miami, Shanle had four tackles, including three solo stops. He also had one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry.
2000: Shanle played in all 11 games and started nine, all except the Texas Tech and Oklahoma games, when NU opened in penny and nickel packages, respectively. Shanle finished fifth on the team in tackles with 55, including 30 solo stops. He recorded four tackles for seven yards lost, including one sack for four yards lost vs. Kansas. His other tackles for loss were against Notre Dame, Baylor and Kansas State. He had a career-best 11 tackles (five solo) at Kansas State and had nine against both Iowa and Colorado (career-best six solo stops). He had a career-best two quarterback hurries vs. Missouri and one each vs. Kansas and Colorado, both of which led to NU interceptions. His two pass breakups came against Iowa State and Colorado. Shanle picked off a Sage Rosenfels pass against Iowa State and returned it 18 yards, but NU did not convert the turnover. Shanle started the 2000 Alamo Bowl vs. Northwestern and had four assisted tackles.
1999: Shanle was a backup Sam linebacker behind senior returning starters Brian Shaw and Tony Ortiz. He played in every game, primarily as an up-front blocker on the Husker punt return team. Shanle had one assisted tackle against Iowa State. In the 2000 Fiesta Bowl vs. Tennessee, Shanle saw action, but did not have any tackles.
1998: A walk-on athlete, Shanle redshirted his first season.
At St. Edward HS: Shanle was a key factor in St. Edward's turnaround from a 3-6 season in his freshman year to 10-1, 9-1 and 10-1 seasons his last three years. A feared running back and defensive back, Shanle was named all-state by the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Journal Star and was named the player of the year by Huskerland Prep Report. He also earned multiple letters in track and basketball, and served as a class officer his senior year.
Personal: The son of Roger and Pam Shanle, Scott was born on Nov. 23, 1979. He majors in family and consumer science and is one of 13 Husker seniors on track to graduate in December 2002. He is a two-year member of the Unity Council.
