Defensive end Randy Gregory battled through an injury-plagued 2014 season to once again be one of the Big Ten’s most disruptive defensive forces. The 6-6, 245-pound Gregory earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second straight season for his play.

Gregory missed two games during the 2014 season, and saw very limited action in two others. Despite missing significant time, Gregory finished with 54 tackles, including a team-high seven sacks for 67 yards in losses. Gregory was third on the team with 10 tackles for loss and led the Huskers with 16 quarterback hurries.

Gregory has a knack for finding the football. In addition to his sacks, Gregory had an interception at Michigan State, forced a fumble and blocked a pair of field goals. His second blocked kick against Minnesota was returned by Nate Gerry for a touchdown.

With his seven sacks in 2014, Gregory increased his career sack total to 17.5 sacks, good for ninth on the NU career sacks list. Gregory is the only player on the list with less than three seasons in a Nebraska uniform.

Following the 2014 season, Gregory chose to enter the NFL Draft, forgoing his final season of collegiate eligibility.

2014 (Junior)
Florida Atlantic: Started, but left the game in the first quarter with an injury and didn’t return. McNeese State: Didn’t play due to injury. Fresno State: Returned to the starting lineup after missing a game due to injury... posted three tackles, all solo stops, in limited playing time. Miami: Ranked third on the team with seven tackles, including a pair of sacks for 25 yards... pair of TFLs pushed his career total to 21 for 126 yards. Illinois: Finished with 2.5 sacks for 17 yards... increased his career sack total to 15. Michigan State: Produced seven tackles in a game for the third time this season... had a first-quarter interception marking his first interception of the season and the second of his career. Northwestern: Produced four tackles and notched a career-best two pass break-ups. Rutgers: Blocked a second-quarter Rutgers field goal, marking Nebraska’s first blocked field goal since Josh Williams blocked a Tennessee-Chattanooga field goal in 2011... recorded a 12-yard sack in the third quarter to give him 5.5 sacks this season and 16 in his career... finished the day with five total tackles and two quarterback hurries in addition to his sack and blocked field goal. Purdue: Had three QB hurries... also had four tackles and a pass breakup. Wisconsin: Split a third-quarter sack, giving him a team-leading 6.0 sacks this season and 16.5 in his career... Minnesota: Blocked a second-quarter field goal, his second of the season and the fourth blocked kick by Nebraska in the past four games (2 FG, 2 punt)... had a 10-yard sack... was his team-high seventh sack of the year and gives him 17.5 career sacks... finished the day with a season-best eight tackles. Iowa: Did not play due to injury. USC: Capped the season with four tackles, including two solo stops.

2013 (Sophomore)
Gregory started 10 of 13 games and finished the year with 66 tackles, including 40 solo stops. He had at least five tackles eight times on the year, including each of the final five games. Gregory registered a season-high eight tackles in four games.

He opened the year with two tackles each against Wyoming and Southern Miss, including his first career tackle for loss against the Golden Eagles. He also had four hurries against Southern Miss. Gregory tied his season high with eight tackles against UCLA, including two tackles for loss for 12 yards, and also forced a fumble against the Bruins.

Gregory’s 33-yard interception return for a touchdown against South Dakota State marked the first interception for a touchdown by a defensive lineman since Ndamukong Suh in 2008. He also made five tackles against the Jackrabbits, including two tackles for loss and split the first sack of his career.

Gregory had his second eight-tackle game of the year against Illinois, incuding five solo stops and a tackle for loss. He made the most of two tackles at Purdue, registering sacks on both, including a 17-yard sack for a safety in the third quarter. He also recovered a fumble in the third quarter. Gregory had one sack each against Minnesota and Northwestern, and his sack against the Wildcats forced Northwestern to kick a late field goal and keep NU’s chances of victory alive.

Gregory earned Big Ten Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors for his effort at Michigan. He notched three of Nebraska’s seven sacks and totaled four tackles for loss totaling 24 yards in the Husker win. Gregory matched his season high with eight tackles against Michigan State, including a nine-yard sack. At Penn State, Gregory had eight tackles, but was held without a sack for only the second time in conference play.

He closed the regular season with five tackles and a sack against Iowa. Gregory had five tackles, including two tackles for a loss and a sack in the Gator Bowl win over Georgia.

Before Nebraska (Arizona Western CC/Hamilton Southeastern HS)
Gregory was regarded as the nation’s top junior-college defensive end prospect and one of the top 10 JUCO prospects regardless of position after his two years at Arizona Western Community College. Gregory received extensive recruiting attention even though he missed the entire 2012 season because of a broken leg.

As a freshman at Arizona Western in 2011, Gregory posted impressive numbers and was named a first-team all-conference defensive end. Gregory had 82 total tackles, including 21 tackles for loss and nine sacks, to help Arizona Western to a trip to the NJCAA title game. He also forced three fumbles and recovered two others for Coach Tom Minnick’s team. In addition to Nebraska, Gregory also visited Iowa State, and received scholarship offers from dozens of schools including Iowa, UCLA, Missouri, Arkansas, Oregon State, Washington, Illinois and West Virginia.

Gregory originally signed with Purdue after a standout prep career at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Ind. He was ranked as one of the top 15 players in Indiana following his senior season. Gregory also had big numbers as a junior in high school, posting 92 tackles, including 17 sacks. In addition to numerous scholarship offers in football, Gregory also attracted Division I basketball interest out of high school.

Personal
Gregory was born on Nov. 23, 1992, and he is the son of Ken and Mary Gregory. He is majoring in sociology. Gregory has volunteered his time with Husker Heroes and visits to the Belmont and Calvert Community rec centers.
