Kpai was recognized as one of the top players in the country as he earned second-team All-America honors from Sports Illustrated as a senior. He finished his prep career with 218 tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, according to the Argus Leader. As both a junior and senior, Kpai was named to the Argus Leader Elite 45 team, which honored the top 45 players in the state regardless of class. Kpai made 79 tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and two forced fumbles as a senior. As a junior, he recorded 63 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and two fumble recoveries. As a sophomore, Kpai helped Washington finish as the state runner-up.

The consensus top prospect in South Dakota, Kpai was regarded as a four-star recruit in the 247Sports Composite rankings, which tabbed Kpai as the nation’s No. 15 outside linebacker recruit and No. 253 overall prospect.
