Tony Samuel Season 1977

1977 (Senior)
Tony was a two year starter at defensive end and was paired with George Andrews to give Nebraska two strong, quick ends. Samuel had 66 total tackles his senior year, plus a fumble recovery and a pass interception. The Huskers finished with a 9-3 record and a Liberty Bowl win against North Carolina, 21-17.

1976 (Junior)
Tony had a solid season as a first time starter at defensive end in 1976. He was one of the leaders on the 1977 Nebraska defensive line. In ‘76 he had 43 total tackles, including 21 unassisted. He also had five behind the line sacks for a loss of 14 yards and he recovered two fumbles and broke up two passes. Tony helped Nebraska finish the season with a 9-3-1 record and an Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl win over Texas Tech, 27-24.

1975 (Sophomore)
Tony backed up All-Big Eight performer Ray Phillips on the left side. He recorded 13 tackles, seven unassisted and a tackle for a loss of four yards. Valasek helped the Huskers finish the season with a 10-2 record and a Fiesta Bowl appearance against Arizona State.

1974 (Redshirt)
Samuel redshirted his second season as a Husker. 

1973 (Freshman)
Tony was a standout with the 1973 unbeaten freshman team. 

Lincoln High School (Jersey City, N.J.)
Samuel earned All-American football honors at Lincoln High School (Jersey City) under Coach Harry Massey. Tony was enrolled in teachers college and is the son of Smith and Elsa Samuel. 

From 1986 to 1996, Samuel coached the outside linebackers and rush ends at Nebraska. Tony was the Head Coach at New Mexico State from 1997-2004 as he compiled a 34-57 record. He was also head coach for Southeast Missouri State where they finished with a 9-3 record and 13th in FCS Division I Football, 7-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2010. He went on to coach outside linebackers and defensive linemen at Georgia state, with a brief stint at UNLV as the defensive line coach before retiring in 2019.
