  • 1979 Honorable Mention All-Big Eight (UPI, AP)

1979 (Senior)
Tom was the Husker’s No. 1 weakside linebacker in 1979. He finished with 76 tackles, including 42 unassisted, four stops behind the line for a loss of 29 yards and one fumble recovery. For his efforts he earned Honorable Mention All-Big Eight honors. 

1978 (Junior)
Vering was the alternate strongside letterman, he had 23 tackles, including 10 solo, and one pass broken up. He had his best games against Cal and Kansas, getting five tackles in each game. Nebraska finished the season with a 9-3 record and an appearance in the Orange Bowl against Oklahoma.

1977 (Sophomore)
Tom filled the starting role in the latter half of the season, finishing with 30 tackles, 19 unassisted and one tackle for a loss of three yards. He helped Nebraska to a 10-2 finish and a Cotton Bowl appearance against Houston in 1979.

1976 (Redshirt)
Vering redshirted his second season as a Husker. 

1975 (Freshman)
Vering walked on as a linebacker for the 1975 freshman team. 

Fremont Bergan High School
Tom was a standout linebacker and I-Back at Fremont Bergan under Coach John Lamme. He was majoring in recreational administration and is the son of Ben and Francis Vering.
