Career
Toby Wright was a leader in the Nebraska secondary as a senior in 1993, before being selected in the second round of the 1994 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He went on to spend five seasons with the Los Angeles (1994) and St. Louis Rams (1995-98), before concluding his six seasons in the NFL with the Washington Redskins in 1999. He played 59 NFL games with 44 career starts, recording seven interceptions, including six over 16 games as a full-time starter for St. Louis in 1995. He also recovered three fumbles in his career, returning two for touchdowns. He totaled 278 tackles in his NFL career.
Wright led Nebraska with three interceptions as a senior rover/strong safety in Nebraska's 4-3 defense in 1993, while also leading the secondary with 79 tackles. He earned second-team All-Big Eight honors from the conference coaches in 1993. He was a member of the Football News All-Bowl Team for his performance against No. 1 Florida State in the national championship game in the 1994 FedEx Orange Bowl. He also participated in the Hula Bowl prior to the NFL Draft.
1993 (Senior)
Wright captured second-team All-Big Eight honors from the conference coaches while adding honorable-mention recognition from the league media after leading the Husker secondary with 79 total tackles and three interceptions as a senior in 1993. He notched his first interception in a 76-14 win over North Texas, which he returned 33 yards for a touchdown. He followed with an interception in a 48-13 win over Colorado State that he returned 34 yards for a touchdown. He added his final interception and a 25-yard return against Oklahoma to set up a Tommie Frazier two-yard touchdown run in a 21-7 win over the No. 16 Sooners in Lincoln to end the regular season with Nebraska's third consecutive Big Eight title. Wright led the Big Red with a career-high 13 tackles in a 14-13 win over Rose Bowl-bound UCLA, while contributing 13 more stops in a 21-17 victory at No. 20 Colorado. He added six pass breakups and one tackle for loss during the regular season. Wright was a key member of a Blackshirt defense that helped the Huskers to an undefeated regular season and a No. 3 final national ranking after a narrow loss to Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward and No. 1 Florida State in the Orange Bowl.
1992 (Junior)
Wright made an instant impact on the Nebraska defense after joining the Huskers from Phoenix Junior College. He closed his first season at NU with 33 total tackles, including five tackles for 17 yards lost. He notched three sacks for 14 yards in losses, while also forcing three fumbles. He added four quarterback hurries and an interception caused, while recording one pass breakup. His breakup and one of his quarterback hurries came in Nebraska's 38-24 win over Kansas State in Tokyo to secure Nebraska's second straight Big Eight Conference title. He finished with a season-high eight tackles against the Wildcats, including four solos. Two of his tackles were sacks against KSU. He also recorded a five-yard sack against Missouri. He capped his junior season with a season-high-tying eight tackles while making his first career start against Florida State in the Orange Bowl. He was a starter in Nebraska's dime defense and played strong safety in the Big Red's 5-2 alignment.
Before Nebraska (Phoenix College/Dobson High School)
Wright was a junior college All-American at Phoenix College while playing for Coach John Aviantos in 1991. Wright led Phoenix with 119 tackles, nine sacks and two interceptions. He earned his associate's degree in December of 1991 and enrolled at Nebraska in January of 1992, joining the Huskers for spring practice.
Wright was the Dobson High School Defensive Player of the Year as a senior for Coach Mike Clark in 1989. A three-time football letterwinner, he played in the offensive backfield, the defensive secondary and as a return man on special teams. He claimed first-team All-Arizona honors as a senior in 1989 after hauling in nine interceptions. He also helped Dobson to a state championship as a junior in 1988.
Personal
The son of Tommie and Mary Wright, Toby was born Nov. 19, 1970, in Phoenix, Ariz. He has three brothers, Tommie, Terry and Torrey, and one sister, Tammie. Terry played in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts and also played in the Canadian Football League. Torrey played football at San Diego State. His father Tommie was an All-American wrestler and a runner-up in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the early 1960s. Tommie was also a high school football coach.
