1973 (Senior)
Steve injured his shoulder and had surgery in the spring but was back in action for the start of the season. He was a strong alternate and starter at quarterback. Starting the game against UCLA and leading the Cornhuskers to a 40-13 rout of the Bruins. He also started the second half of the 1974 Cotton Bowl game and led Nebraska to a 19-3 victory over Texas. During his senior year, Runty completed 22 of 37 passes, had four interceptions and three for two touchdowns while carrying the ball 36 times for 81 yards.
Steve was a key contributor to why the Huskers had the fourth best rushing attack (225.4 ypg) and the second best passing offense (170.6 ypg) in the Big Eight during the ‘73 season. Runty helped the Huskers to a 9-2-1 record.
1972 (Junior)
Steve and Dave Humm gave the Huskers solid one-two punch at quarterback. Runty and Humm combined to set a Big Eight record for touchdown passes by a team with 23- Steve had six (a record that has since been passed). He was the Husker’s No. 3 man in total offense with 559 yards.
Runty helped lead the Huskers to the Big Eight’s top passing attack for the second consecutive season. Nebraska also ranked fourth in the conference in rushing offense, averaging 219.3 yards per game, and finished second in total offense at 440.3 yards per game.
1971 (Sophomore)
Runty did not attempt a pass during his sophomore season but rushed two times for 17 yards for a 8.5 average. Nebraska finished with an undefeated record (13-0) and beat Alabama 38-6, in the National Championship game.
1970 (Redshirt)
Steve redshirted his second season as a Husker.
1969 (Freshman)
Steve saw limited action with 1969 freshman, but completed .692 completion percentage.
Ogallala High School (Ogallala, Nebraska)
Steve lettered in football, basketball and track under Coach Cliff Hermance. Steve is the son of Charles and Avis Runty. Runty signed with the Omaha Mustangs.
